A convoy of Olive Branch Police Department vehicles and motorcycles, along with a large department trailer , all blowing sirens and flashing red and blue lights “invaded” a number of city neighborhoods Tuesday night . The only suspects that the bevy of Olive Branch officers , led by Police Chief Don Gammage , were looking for were as many of the neighborhood residents as possible. The “invasion” was not done to put handcuffs on, but rather give handouts, as in drinks, chips and stuffed toys for the kids, all part of the department’s observance of National Night Out. Each year, law enforcement agencies across the country take time one evening to hold events that gets officers to the community to promote partnerships that make their cities safer. Riverside utility employees worked throughout the night Monday to restore water to residents in and around the River Bend Apartments . Mayor Rusty Jessup said water was restored to residents around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday after crews worked throughout the night to repair a 6- inch water main . Jessup said he believes the water main was struck by lightning. “It could have happened Saturday night ,” he said. He said the main was 7 feet underground and encased in concrete, which would have been the reason the break wasn’t found until Monday morning. He said city employees started working on the busted water main at 6 a.m. Monday and did not leave the site until 8 a.m. Tuesday. Jessup said about the time workers completed repairs to the initial water main break at 9:30 p.m., Monday, “the other end blew,” which further delayed restoring water service to River Bend Apartment residents .

The two were killed in a three-alarm blaze that left 11 adults and nine children homeless. The fire destroyed their apartment and heavily damaged two of the seven others in the 100-year-old former St. Mary's Church at 62 School St. The Brelsfords -- whose names were confirmed by neighbors and co-workers but not fire or police officials -- were the third and fourth victims of fatal fires in Connecticut this week. Updated 11:35 a.m. Monday GREENSBORO — Police are still working to establish a motive in the shooting of a man early Saturday morning . Anthony James Dochtermann , 25, was shot around 2:55 a.m. and later died at the hospital from his injuries, according to police. Police received a 911 call about a shooting at the Ashton Woods Apartments at 3927 Hahns Lane from a friend Dochtermann was visiting. "He went outside and it sounds like he got shot," the caller told the dispatcher. "He walked outside, like he was leaving." Later in the call, the friend said Dochtermann, "doesn't know who shot him or anything." The friend helped Dochtermann while on the phone with 911, telling the dispatcher Dochtermann was still awake and breathing, but "bleeding a lot." They also said traffic would worsen on Mill Slough Road and Woodcrest Boulevard if Palm State Development in Lakeland goes through with its plans to build about 180 houses and 200 apartments over three to five years. The city commission Tuesday night gave a big boost to those plans, voting 3 to 2 to annex the developer's 98 acres and approve zoning that could allow houses, stores and apartments on the land, which hugs Florida's Turnpike to the west. FORT LAUDERDALE , Fla. - A BMW caught fire Tuesday night in a parking garage that is attached to a six- story apartment building in Fort Lauderdale , authorities said. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials said firefighters and police evacuated the building as the fire began to spread. A photo taken at the scene shows the BMW engulfed in flames.  Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the  fire, limiting the damage to the building. Authorities said all residents were able to go back into their homes after the fire was extinguished and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. A lightning strike from Tuesday afternoon's severe weather sparked the fire on the roof of the apartment complex around 4:45 p.m., according to Orange County Fire Rescue spokesman John Mulhall . The fire burned through the roof, damaging 24 apartment units in the three-story building off Colonial Drive near State Road 408, officials said. No one was hurt in the fire. American Red Cross volunteers went out to the complex around 6:30 p.m. They visited with each family, asking whether they needed somewhere to stay for the night. Eight families are being housed at a hotel for a few days. The others are living with relatives or friends temporarily, Red Cross spokeswoman Erin Pagan said Wednesday. CHEYENNE ­– An Oregon developer is looking to bring more subsidized apartments to the north side of the city. Commonwealth Development Corporation is pushing plans for a two-building, 41-unit development at 4306 Dell Range Blvd ., which is just east of College Drive and north of Dell Range. The project received approval Thursday night for a conditional use on the property from the Cheyenne Board of Adjustment. The development still needs to be rezoned and annexed into the city by the City Council, since the property is in a county pocket. The council’s Public Services Committee will hear testimony on those changes Tuesday. The introduction of the three-story complex comes on the heels of a debate over a larger income-restricted development about 2 miles away. Summit Housing Group got its rezoning request approved during Monday night’s City Council meeting for property east of Converse Avenue between Dell Range and Storey boulevards. Grassroots efforts to establish rent control in more California cities could get a boost from the California Apartment Association ’s decision to abandon its lawsuits seeking to overturn voter-approved rent-control laws in Richmond and Mountain View. The association, which represents landlords, posted on its website late Friday that it has “suspended its legal efforts” to overturn Measure V in Mountain View and Measure L in Richmond. “I hope it emboldens other communities to not be chilled by threats of lawsuits,” said Juliet Brodie, a Stanford Law School professor who helped draft Measure V. Judges in Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties had previously ruled against the association’s motions for preliminary injunctions seeking to halt implementation of the measures approved by each city’s voters in November.
