Fire at River Reach apartments displaces 71 residents

The American Red Cross provided money and shelter to the dozens of people displaced from their homes after a fire Tuesday at River Reach Apartments.

A lightning strike from Tuesday afternoon's severe weather sparked the fire on the roof of the apartment complex around 4:45 p.m., according to Orange County Fire Rescue spokesman John Mulhall.

The fire burned through the roof, damaging 24 apartment units in the three-story building off Colonial Drive near State Road 408, officials said.

No one was hurt in the fire.

American Red Cross volunteers went out to the complex around 6:30 p.m. They visited with each family, asking whether they needed somewhere to stay for the night.

Eight families are being housed at a hotel for a few days. The others are living with relatives or friends temporarily, Red Cross spokeswoman Erin Pagan said Wednesday.

In the meantime, Red Cross is working with each family to find new homes, she said.

Each family received money from Red Cross to buy food and clothing.

The total amount of money varied by family need, Pagan said.

"We're continuing to work with the apartment complex today in case there are any outstanding emergency needs," Pagan said.
