The struggles of the impoverished are well documented. But how about the unique pain and struggle associated with being wealthy in New York City? In her research for “ Uneasy Street : The Anxieties of Affluence” ( Princeton University Press , out Sept. 5), Rachel Sherman interviewed 50 New York-area parents of young children, whose household incomes ranged from $250,000 to $10 million and with assets totaling up to $50 million. These locals live pampered lives — with multiple high-end properties, teams of household employees and frequent, lavish vacations — but still, they do impressive mental gymnastics to avoid identifying themselves as truly rich. For instance: Helen, a stay-at-home mom with an annual family income of $2 million, describes herself as “in the middle, in the sense that there are so many people with so much money. The company, launched in Orlando by Atlanta-based Lane Co. in 2006, is wrapping up work on portions of its first complex in Florida, a 384- unit development in Osceola County called Verano Apartments . Work began on Verano, located just off Exit 244 of Florida's Turnpike near Walt Disney World , in November 2007. While leasing has begun and some of the one- to three-bedroom units are occupied, work is continuing and the complex should be completed by February, according to Mike Mulhall, the company's Florida regional development partner . Back in June I noted that construction fences had gone up around the Burger King at 575 El Camino Real , near Whipple Avenue. After doing some research I wrote about the planned remodel in my post Fact Finding . I was encouraged when, one week later, a large hydraulic excavator and a small tractor appeared on the site; surely demolition was imminent. However, it wasn’t until just a few days ago—some eight weeks later—that demolition began. On Monday of this week, the site looked like this: Whereas on Tuesday it looked like this: This project is billed as a remodel, but as you can see it is a complete teardown and rebuild. When done we will have an all-new Burger King that is smaller than the original and rotated so that the main entrance is towards the back (facing the Caltrain tracks) with the drive-through up against the sidewalk along El Camino.
