Shift happens: Hipsters’ inner city exodus

Image
Changing face of real estate SYDNEY’S hipster culture has been shifting to suburbia as penny- pinching young people abandon more inner city suburbs like Newtown and Surry Hills to buy in cheaper outlying areas or move back in with their parents. An analysis of census data has revealed traditionally family -friendly suburbs such as Gordon, Lindfield, Rodd Point and Eastwood had among Sydney’s biggest spikes in the population of 25-35-year-olds over the past five years. This was despite no major changes to rental or property demand or natural population increase . Hipsters are leaving Newtown. And moving in with their parents. Analysts instead attributed the rise in young adults moving out of the city to a trend in which many were returning to their family homes to help save money. With average weekly room rents within 5km of the CBD at $350 and apartment rents at $650, those who moved back in with their parents could save about $18,000 or more per year. Other suburbs with a signific...

Long Island Index pushes for more in-home rental apartments

A Long Island research group is urging local governments to consider allowing more rental apartments in private homes, to help cash-strapped homeowners and provide more housing for renters. In a report released Saturday , the Long Island Index outlines the vast differences in the ways Long Island ’s towns, cities and villages deal with so- called accessory apartments , or small units within owner-occupied homes. Most Popular The approaches range from fairly accepting — as in the Town of Babylon, where homeowners can get permits to rent out apartments if they meet certain conditions — to strict, as in the Town of North Hempstead , where such units can only be occupied by the homeowner’s parent or child. Long Island has a patchwork of rules for accessory apartments , which vary so widely that many homeowners fear getting penalized, so they don’t even try to create apartments, even if they want to and might be allowed, said Nancy Rauch Douzinas , publisher of the Index. The Index is a...

Encounter with ‘characters’ in Things Fall Apart

How it would feel meeting relations of the people who inspired the creation of characters in an epic novel? Evelyn Osagie met those linked with the globally acclaimed Things Fall Apart at Ogidi, Anambra State. As guests made their way into Ogidi Town Hall that afternoon to pay their last respects to the man who was known as the Ikenga and the Ugonabo of Ogidi, the statue of the legendary warrior Ezechuamagha welcomed them with his staff in hand. Little did they know that it was no ordinary statue. He is the town’s progenitor from whom sprang the four quarters of Ogidi-Uru, Akanano, Ikenga and Ezinkwo and nine villages: Uru, Ogidiani, Ezi-Ogidi, Adazi-Ogidi, Nkwelle-Ogidi, Ikenga, Abo-Ogidi, Ire-Ogidi and Umuru in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The town, which has since become a reference point for the literary-minded, continues to inspire those willing to draw inspiration from the ancestral home of the iconic novelist, the late Prof. Chinua Achebe, the Ugo...

FT correspondent’s warm memories of difficult days in Madrid

Image
I arrived in Madrid in December 2012, in time to celebrate the bleakest Christmas the city had seen in a generation. Capital and country were reeling from a series of shocks that had brought Spain to the brink of ruin. Six months earlier, a slow- burning banking crisis had blazed out of control, forcing the government to request billions in rescue aid from its European partners. Spain was in recession and suffering an unemployment crisis that would see the jobless rate peak at 27 per cent a few months after my arrival. Reminders of the nation’s desperation were everywhere. On days when I took my son to kindergarten we would pass a long line of people — not all of them poorly dressed — waiting outside a church- run soup kitchen . Walking to my office in the morning, I would find more and more shops boarded up. Inexplicably, the tiny store that sold and repaired mechanical typewriters held out, defying both the economic downturn and technical obsolescence. Then, one day, I found that ...

Florida slaying puts spotlight on possible neo-Nazi plot as details emerge

Image
The slayings of two young men in Florida, allegedly at the hands of their roommate, has exposed disturbing evidence of a credible neo-Nazi threat to public safety, federal investigators say. Devon Arthurs, the 19-year-old co-founder of the obscure neo-Nazi group "Atomwaffen Division," was arrested in the May 19 fatal shooting of his roommates, 18-year-old Andrew Oneschuk and 22-year-old Jeremy Himmelman . At the time of the arrest, officials said Arthurs claimed he killed Oneschuk and Himmelman to thwart a domestic terrorist attack by Atomwaffen, which is German for “atomic weapon.” “I prevented the deaths of a lot of people,” Arthurs said in a rambling statement, according to officials. Asked why his roommates planned such an attack, he said, “Because they want to build a Fourth Reich.” Related Image undated photo provided by Kianna Kaizer, shows Jeremy Himmelman and his girlfriend Kianna Kaizer .
