Why Denver apartment buildings don’t recycle, according to property managers

Beaty/Denverite) Denver is really bad at recycling, like only 18 percent of waste gets recycled or composted bad, and part of the reason is its apartments. The city doesn’t pick up from these multi-family dwellings, nor does it require them to recycle, but as an apartment-dweller myself, I had to know more about why not.  After all, a survey from the nonprofit CoPIRG found that 88 percent of Denver residents find recycling is “very important or essential.” Even if the city doesn’t require recycling, apartment residents might balk at the absence of recycling, right? I started with Boutique Apartment s, the company that manages the building where I live. And yes, sometimes residents do request recycling, said the company’s ma...

Rent control rumored to be driving apartment sales | News

Mountain View's rent- control program has already survived political and legal trials -- but what about the business test? An increasing number of apartment owners appear to be cashing out rather than working under the new restrictions. If the trend continues, some say it will lead to a cascade of redevelopment spearheaded by large corporate buyers . This scenario would result in older apartments being phased out and replaced with new housing that is exempt from rent control. Those looking at the data with a more critical eye point out that sales of apartment buildings are up throughout the South Bay, and that the number of buyers indicates a healthy interest in investing in Mountain View housing , regardless of rent control. To take one example, Fremont residents Ann and Paul Lethers decided in June to sell their 18-unit complex on Del Medio Avenue in Mountain View, which they created from separate purchases of two adjacent nine-unit buildings. They say they h...

Difference between housing society and apartments owners association and condominium

The meaning of Condominium is a Building or Complex of Buildings containing a number of individually owned Apartments or houses. Though this concept isvery old one of ownership for buildings in Mumbai, it is the Co- operative Housing Society model which has been and even today, is the most popular and preferred so far. Buyers who purchase premises on an 'ownership' basis require to come together to manage the building and for that purpose, one of the ways is to form a Co- operative Society , which is regulated by the Maharashtra Co- operative Societies Act , 1960. An alternative to a Co- operative Housing Society was introduced by the Maharashtra Apartment Ownership Act , 1970, which provides for the formation of a Condominium. The buyers of premises in a Condominium are called Apartment owners who form an association known as an 'Association of Apartment Owners ' in case of both i.e. residential as well as non-residential premises. The meaning of...

This is why apartment living is different for the poor

Image
This article is the first in a series based on new research into the place of lower-income and disadvantaged households in a compact city. There’s been a lot of talk about apartment living of late. Whether it’s millennials who can’t afford to buy a house, downsizers making a lifestyle change, owner-occupiers struggling to get defective buildings fixed , or foreign investors buying into new development, there’s no shortage of opinions and interest. Except for one group: lower-income and vulnerable residents . In Greater Sydney, the latest census data show that almost one in five households (17%) living in apartments and townhouses have weekly household incomes of less than A$649. Among this group the largest sub-group (36%) live in private rental housing . That’s more than 72,000 households living on $649 or less per week in a housing market where average weekly rents for apartments are $550. Our research for Shelter NSW identifies multiple challenges such households face. Further...

Unsung heroes of Athens cityscape

Credit: Benaki Museum, Costas Megalokonomou Archives Builders, Housewives and the Construction of Modern Athens is a book for those of us who, blinded by the classical wonders of the Acropolis, have never given much thought to the nondescript cityscape below. This is not about architect- led building design but an effort to understand the positives of Athens’ 20th century urbanism, warts and all. The heroes of the book are the polykatoikia – the prolific post- war apartment buildings that were built at impressive pace using reinforced concrete frames with masonry infill. While their white facades, flat roofs and horizontal lines bore some similarities to the forms of modern architecture, these were, as autho...

River Terrace Apartments

Quizzes Lists Topics Save The River Terrace Apartments is an apartment building located at 7700 East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. [1] River Terrace Apartments was one of the first two garden apartment complexes built in Michigan which used loan guarantees from the Federal Housing Administration , the other being Hillcrest Village in East Lansing. [2] History By the late 19th century , the corridor along East Jefferson Avenue had become a prestigious residential neighborhood . As the automobile age dawned in the twentieth century and Detroit's population boomed, large upscale apartment buildings were constructed along the Avenue. However, this boom in apartment construction collapsed at the start of the Great Depression. However, in 1939, Wesson Seyburn, along with Leonard P. Reaume, of the property management firm of Holden & Reaume, applied for a building permit to construct this apart...
