How to find cheap apartments in Los Angeles

There's a short/easy way and a longer/more comprehensive way.  First thing  you need to do is figure out what you can spend and where you want to live.  Take into account expenses for living farther away from work (gas, gym membership, eating out more).  Then check out this map to get a general idea of what you can afford in the areas you want to live.

Find the best place to live in Los Angeles

Easy way:

The easiest/cheapest way is to use Craigslist to find someone you can sublease from or rent with.  It is always going to be more expensive to live solo than with someone else.  So find a roommate to live with.

Once you have a roommate or are certain you want to live alone, check out the following apartment sites: Westside rentals (Rent SoCal Houses, Apartments & More),Southbay rentals (Apartments for Rent - Homes for Rent), apartments.com, padmapper, and Zillow.com.

Westside rentals cost $60 for 2 months, but it is the most user friendly/informative site and probably has the best selection for higher priced units.  Even if you are looking at cheaper stuff, its worth paying the $60 for it if you've exhausted the options on the other websites.

Long way:

Not everything is listed on the sites above.  For example, if you look around Downtown LA on these sites, you will see a few listings.  However, there are actually tons of apartment buildings with availabilities that aren't listed.  Its up to the owner to list an availability on these sites which they don't always do that (for various reasons including owners forget or it takes too much time/effort to maintain listings). 

Therefore, after you identify areas you want to live in that fit your budget, you should drive the streets and look for: 1) for rent signs and 2) apartment buildings' with contact info.  Then call every for rent sign to ask about the price and call every apartment building to ask about their rent and their next availability.  Apartment buildings' don't always have signs posted that they have an availability or they might have one coming up that they haven't posted about yet.  By scouring an area and calling every possible apartment that might have an availability, you will be sure you have exhausted all resources to find the cheapest apartments in the area.

Finally, if you are still reading this, you can try to lease in a rent controlled area and possibly sublease/room with someone who has been living in a rent controlled apartment.  This won't be easy to find as there aren't many rent controlled apartments in LA, but it is an option.  As a general rule, rent control only applies to building built after October 1978 and these are the only cities that have rent control:  some of Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Malibu and West Hollywood.
