The charred rag outside the apartment (FOX Carolina/ Aug. 14, 2017) Firefighters on scene (FOX Carolina/ Aug. 14, 2017) SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) - The Spartanburg fire marshal said police are investigating a fire that was intentionally set at a Spartanburg apartment complex early Monday morning . The fire was reported just after 4 a.m. Monday at Prince Hall Apartments on Prince Hall Lane . Fire Marshal Brad Hall said a rag was soaked in gasoline, placed between the door and screen door of an apartment and then set on fire. The call was originally reported as a fire with entrapment because the fire was outside the door, but Hall said everyone made it out unharmed. Hall said the residents were able to put out the fire using a pot of water. He said the apartment complex 's brick and concrete construction helped prevent the fire from spreading. “We have no clue who would have done this,” said Teavon Coleman, who was asleep in the apartment when the fire was set. Coleman sai...

Valletta, Malta’s compact, walkable capital , overlooks its magnificent Grand Harbor . (John McKenna/Alamy Stock Photo) A strategic location can be more curse than blessing. Just ask the Maltese, whose tiny island nation lies 50 miles below Sicily. Early in World War II, when Malta was a British possession, Germany and Italy bombed it almost daily. And centuries earlier it was the site of the Great Siege of 1565, a devastating, yet ultimately unsuccessful, step by the Ottoman Turks toward conquering all of western Europe. For travelers today, Malta’s proximity to Europe’s glamour destinations is a definite plus — if not a widely appreciated one. Often experienced as a day stop on Mediterranean cruises, Malta greatly rewards a longer stay. The 17-by-8-mile island is packed with lovingly restored sites that bring history to life, as my wife and I discovered in mid-May in what served as a perfect four-day prelude to a Venice visit. Beyond its history, Malta’s landscape offers a natu...

It happened in my apartment complex Thursday afternoon in Mckinney, TX between 4pm-4:30pm. I did not arrive at my apartment until around 6:30pm, but from the pictures that I took, the police were still there quartering off part of the area with yellow tape. A total of six cop cars and two unmarked cars were there with detectives and forensics investigating the scene. Upon walking up to one of the cops, he quickly told me that everything was ok and after I repeatedly asked him the question and told him that I lived here and had a right to know, he rose his tone and then said, if you want to know, talk to the manager of the complex.   That would be nice, except that the manager of the complex was gone for the day. So I know that if I ask management what happened tomorrow, I will get a pass the ball response, in which they will most likely tell me to contact the police for information. Therefore, since it is going on now, I’d feel better to sleep at night if I knew what was happening NOW...

There was some confusion among Planning Commission members during their Nov. 26 meeting this week. Will The Tiburon apartment complex be built if the city doesn't create the public infrastructure necessary to sustain it? Commissioners weren't sure of the answer. In October, when City Councilmembers approved preliminary plans for The Tiburon, the council liked the idea of new development, but knew the proposed location on Olson Memorial Highway would need some public improvement, like sidewalks and improved street lighting . Councilmembers asked the Housing and Development Authority to explore the idea of designating the area near Tiburon as a Tax Increment Financing district , or a TIF district. But on Monday night, when the Planning Commission was asked to recommend approval of final planned unit development plans for the apartment buildings, some commissioners weren't sure if they should approve plans without knowing if the area would become a TIF district. Planni...

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Jury deliberations resumed Monday in the trial of a Moreno Valley woman accused of fatally shooting her 56-year-old husband to collect more than $1 million in life insurance proceeds . Lorraine Alison Hunter , 61, could face the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder with special circumstance allegations of lying in wait and killing for financial gain in the 2009 execution-style slaying of Albert Thomas. Following nearly two weeks of testimony at the Riverside Hall of Justice, the prosecution and defense made closing statements Thursday , after which jurors deliberated about an hour before going home for the weekend. Riverside County Deputy District Attorney Will Robinson's key witness was Hunter's now-23-year-old daughter, Briuana Lashanae Hunter , who confessed to plotting with her mother to kill Thomas. Briuana Hunter pleaded guilty last year to three counts of attempted murder and one count of voluntary manslaughter. She's slated ...
