Furniture Robotic ? http://www.pymnts.com/news/retail/2017/is-the-future-of-furniture-robotic/"> Furniture Robotic ?&BODY=I found this article interesting and thought of sharing it with you. Check it out: http://www.pymnts.com/news/retail/2017/is-the-future-of-furniture-robotic/"> As Americans — particularly younger Americans — are becoming increasingly urban , they are needing to learn to think differently about space.  In New York City, the average studio has only 550 square feet, while the average one bedroom clocks in with a not-exactly- cavernous 750 average square footage . In San Fransisco, the figures are similar — and in most of the nation’s top cities, 750-850 are considered about the norm.  Somewhat less expensive markets have somewhat larger apartment homes on offer — 1,000 or so square feet tends to run at more the norm. We should note that apartments are getting smaller — in 2009, the average NYC apartment was around 1,000 square feet. Compare that...

Studio Apartment Decorating Tips | Apartment Therapy

One of the biggest downsides to studio living is feeling like you live — and entertain — in your bedroom. But even though that might physically/technically be true, it doesn't mean you can't use design to make it feel like it's more than just a studio. These smart and stylish studios — all under 500 square feet — employ three of the most successful ways to make a studio apartment feel bigger than it is. And they're design tips that anyone can use (whether you have more than one room or not!) to make any room feel better. Choose double duty furniture Alee Ruggieri's 200 square foot Greenwich Village studio Alee's studio apartment is successful thanks to the powers of double- duty furniture . In the morning, her bed transforms into what looks like a sofa by a simple rearrangement of throw pillows. Placing it with a long edge against a wall (like you would a sofa), helps the illusion. Arranging the rest of the home's furniture around the bed/sofa makes he...

Giving life back to an industrial landmark

Image
Giving life back to an industrial landmark " /> Giving life back to an industrial landmark " /> More Arts & Culture When Becky Steinhoff ’s organization purchased an abandoned foundry on Waubesa Street in 2005, she couldn’t immediately envision it as the thriving home of the Goodman Community Center . Now an $11.2 million expansion is in the works to retain a nearby architectural landmark and accommodate the center’s growing needs. The Goodman Community Center annually serves 35 ,000 to 40,000 children, teens, seniors and other residents in need. “From the time we moved in here, we’ve grown almost 400 percent,” says Steinhoff, the organization’s executive director who has led the center since 1991. “So we are back in the position of needing space.” To that end, the private nonprofit organization has embarked on a project to restore, renovate and expand the former Madison Brass Works building just across Waubesa Street and the Capital City Bike Path from the...

Review board unsatisfied with Capitol Hill transit development project

There were many aspects of the four- site Capitol Hill transit - oriented development the East Design Review Board liked, but confidence was not high enough to clear it for permitting on Wednesday. Situated above the light rail station , the transit- oriented development will be Capitol Hill’s largest construction project to date, creating more than 400 apartment units in a superblock that borders Broadway , 10th Avenue, East John Street and East Denny Way. Each of the four buildings will be seven stories. Three will provide around 20 percent of their apartment units at affordable levels, while the Capitol Hill Housing B-North site will include 110 units at affordability rates of 30-60 percent of the area median income . The East Design Review Board ’s last assessment of the development, which is being led by Portland- based Gerding Edlen Development (GED), was in December. Board members agreed developers responded to the guidance provided at that time, but didn’t feel every r...
