Authorities say a man fatally shot a woman outside a Douglas County home before killing their 3-year-old daughter and himself near wetlands roughly 10 miles away.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday morning that autopsies on the three killed have been completed. They have been identified as 41-year-old Peter Sander of rural Douglas County, 36-year-old Erin Berg of Maryville, MO and Mazey Berg.
Deputies said Sander shot and killed Mazey and then shot himself taking his own life. Law enforcement officials found Mazey and Sander near Erin Berg's vehicle at the Baker Wetlands.
That occurred a short time after he shot and killed Erin Berg in the driveway of a home in the 1000 block of East 900 Road. The sheriff's office said Sander nor Erin Berg had any association to the home, and it's unknown why they were in that area when the initial shooting occurred.
Investigators said Sander and Erin Berg had previously been in a relationship but were no longer in that relationship.
People who live in the area where the crime happened have more questions than answers.
“I heard, ‘Pow, pow, pow, pow.’ And I was like, ‘Whoa, those sound like gunshots,’” Martha Beard said.
“We’ve got a 2-year-old, a 4-year-old and a 13-year-old grandchild and, yeah, that broke our heart when we heard that,” Pat Beard said.
Martha Beard says she thinks this is a one-time incident. She and her husband say the entire thing was unsettling.
