Closure Of Grocery Stores Sparks Worry In Rapid City

The closure of almost a quarter of Rapid City's grocery stores is sparking concerns about food availability among some residents and organizations.

SpartanNash announced last month that three of its stores - Prairie Market, Family Thrift Center and Family Thrift Express - will close in October in a consolidation effort. The city of roughly 74,000 residents has a total of 13 grocery stores.

One nonprofit, Feeding South Dakota, says the closures will result in "food deserts," or areas without grocery stores, particularly affecting low-income residents. It also means a loss of stores within walking distance for people in the city's central and western neighborhoods.

Rapid City resident Brittany Romey says people in nearby apartments may not be able to easily change to another store.
