Community response to apartment fire is appreciated

On behalf of the residents of 100 Washington Square Apartments, Cheney Real Estate Management and its employees would like to take the opportunity to thank those involved in responding to the fire on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017.

Both Cheney and EWU police departments were first on scene and put their lives at risk to aid residents who were unable to get to safety on their own. The fire response teams, coordinated by (Cheney Fire Department) Tim Steiner, displayed bravery in their rapid response to take control of the situation. Fire departments assisting the Cheney Fire Department included Fire District 3, Fire District 10, Fairchild Fire Department, Medical Lake Fire Department, Spokane Ladder Company No. 4 with a battalion chief and a Spokane fire investigator.

AMR Ambulance was on scene providing medical care and transportation for both residents and emergency response personnel. The Red Cross graciously provided immediate moral and financial support, calming fears and offering resources and compassion.

Cheney Public Works and Light Department employees assisted the firefighters by closing streets to protect firefighting equipment and terminating electrical power to the burning building.

Lastly, we would like to thank the many unnamed citizens who kindly provided cash gifts to displaced residents, donated sandwiches, delivered pizza donated by Domino’s as well as various other people contributing charitable services.

The outpouring from the community has been overwhelming. We cannot express our gratitude enough to all those involved and offering assistance. A life threatening situation was improved by the selflessness displayed by so many.

Springfield police raid Worthington Street apartment, arrest 4 men on heroin and cocaine charges

SPRINGFIELD -- Four suspects, squatters in a Worthington Street apartment , were arrested on heroin and cocaine charges Thursday night after police raided the place, a department spokesman said. Narcotics officers executed their warrant at 900 Worthington St ., Suite 3, at about 8:30 p.m., Sgt. John Delaney said. People outside the building yelled out warnings as police initiated their raid. The four men were arrested after police found them hiding inside closets and a bedroom, Delaney, public information officer for the department said. Police seized $1,164 in cash along with heroin and cocaine that was packaged for sale and drug paraphernalia. Arrested were: Daquan Fortune, 27, of 1231 Bay St.; Bradley Davis, 27 ,of 755 Worthington St .; Eric Williams, 25, of 10 Federal Court; and Rysheim Smith, 23, of 317 Peekskill Ave. They were charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
