Sterling Heights apartment fire leaves one dead, 16 units damaged | News

A 33-year-old woman was killed and 16 apartment units were damaged in a fire that began shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday at the Sterling Knolls Apartments.

The woman has been identified as Laura Ann Phillips, who would have celebrated her 34th birthday on May 20.

Firefighters from Sterling Heights, Warren, Shelby Township and Utica responded to the fire at about 11:30 p.m. at the apartments, located on 15 Mile Road and Maple Lane.

Sterling Heights Fire Chief Chris Martin said a resident knocked on other residents’ doors in an effort to notify them about the fire.

Firefighters removed two people from the building, but were not able to remove Phillips, who had been trapped inside.

Additionally, two firefighters and one Sterling Knolls resident were sent to a hospital for treatment, but they have since been released.

Martin said they knocked down the fire in about 45 minutes, but remained at the scene for a few hours afterward.

He said the apartment complex and American Red Cross are helping displaced residents find temporary housing and get the things they need. The fire department is working on helping them get into the building to retrieve some of their valuables, he said.

St. Blase and St. Thomas churches have reached out to help the residents as well.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Springfield police raid Worthington Street apartment, arrest 4 men on heroin and cocaine charges

SPRINGFIELD -- Four suspects, squatters in a Worthington Street apartment , were arrested on heroin and cocaine charges Thursday night after police raided the place, a department spokesman said. Narcotics officers executed their warrant at 900 Worthington St ., Suite 3, at about 8:30 p.m., Sgt. John Delaney said. People outside the building yelled out warnings as police initiated their raid.
