Ohio man arrested for urinating in store’s beer cooler

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A toddler was pronounced dead at Nationwide Children’s Hospital Thursday evening after being pulled from a pool on the city’s north side.

Columbus police responded to a pool at Worthington Meadows Apartments just after 7pm. They told NBC4 they believed the child was a 2-year-old boy.

Sgt. Stan Latta said three patrol officers attempted to resuscitate the child before a medic took him to the hospital. The boy, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at 7:45pm.

Police said the boy’s mother was with him at the pool, which was near the apartment complex on Wellingshire Boulevard. The pool was still open for the season.

Neighbors said they got to the pool shortly after this happened Thursday and said the child’s mother was screaming and pleading for help.

Livia Zaragoza said the woman did not speak much English, so she communicated with her to get information to call 911.

“The little girl, she running out and I say, ‘What happened?'” Zaragoza said. “Because she scream, and she say, ‘My little brother is died.’ I say, ‘What do you mean?’ She say, ‘Yeah, he’s fall in the water.'”

Nekia Fields got to the pool a short time later, after seeing police cruisers and emergency vehicles.

“Our kids play together, they hang out together,” Fields said of the apartment complex community. “So when something like this happens, it affects everybody.”

She expressed frustration at what happened.

“No one seen this child missing at two years old?” Fields said. “Even if you were on the phone, you got kids, you got to be responsible, you got to pay attention. Period, point blank. It’s a sad, unfortunate situation.”

Sgt. Latta said the incident appears to be accidental and said there are no signs of foul play.
