Unity Rally to address racial divide in Muskegon County after incidents

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, MI -- Following a contentious week in the Muskegon area and throughout the United States, the Unity Rally for Racial Understanding seeks to close the racial divide in Muskegon County.

The event is in response to several racially-charged incidents in the county throughout the week, including a noose hung from a swing set at Glenside School in Muskegon, said organizer Eddie Sanders Jr., of Muskegon Heights.

The rally is scheduled for 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Rowan Park in Muskegon Heights.

Sanders emphasized that the rally is a peaceful event, and everyone is welcome. The event is not about political affiliation, but community, he said.

"We just want to have an open dialogue," he said. "We're trying to come to some kind of closure for the racial divide in Muskegon County."

The rally will include guest speakers and open dialogue.

"They can express their concerns, their hurts and their fears," Sanders said. "Hopefully, people can leave better than they came."
