ABILENE, Texas - A teacher’s concern about students showing up to school in “old or falling apart shoes” has resulted in Abilene firefighters coming to the rescue.

An email from a worried teacher to a top Abilene fire official led to the Abilene Fire Department and FDLIC being able to raise more than $1,400 and purchase 53 pairs of shoes for students at Ortiz Elementary.

The firefighters took the action after Deputy Chief Cande Flores sent an email urging them to “either donate money or buy a pair of shoes to help some of these families in need of new shoes,” the fire department said in a social media message Thursday.

That email resulted in firefighters from Station 4 and Station 7 battling to see who could raise the most money for needy students at Ortiz Elementary.

Capt. Randall Scalf and his Engine 4 crew were able to attend the presentation of shoes and money to this school.
