Child who fell from window of Lakewood high-rise apartment dies from injuries

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- A 1-year-old boy that fell nine floors from the window of a high-rise apartment building Wednesday night has died from his injuries, police say.

A sergeant with the Lakewood Police Department said police were notified of the child's death late Wednesday night.

Police received a call about the fall at about 7 p.m. Wednesday, Police Sgt. Steve Fioritto said. The child fell from the ninth floor of the Castlewood Apartments in the 17600 block of Detroit Avenue.

Police estimated the boy fell 72 feet.

The boy was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center by EMS.

Fioritto said investigators are not currently looking into any sinister scenarios surrounding the child's fall.

"We're looking into everything, but that's not an angle we're specifically looking into right now," Fioritto said.

Another sergeant said early Thursday morning he could not release any more information about the incident, referring further questions to the police chief Timothy Malley.

He did say the windows in the apartment are just over a foot above the floor.

This is at least the third incident of a young child falling from an apartment window in the Cleveland area in the past two years. In January 2013, a 2-year-old boy died after falling from a window on the 17th floor of Crystal Tower Apartments in East Cleveland.

In July 2014, a 2-year-old girl died after falling through the screen of a second-floor apartment window on Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights. The window was about 20 to 25 feet above the ground.
