Apartment house in Indian Hills is set for public hearing Aug. 18


Multi-family apartment housing in Tama for Iowa Premium Beef workers moved a step closer Monday night, Aug. 4. Tama City Council members voted 3-0 to set a public hearing for Monday, Aug. 18, at 5:30 p.m. on the granting of option to purchase city-owned land on the northwest side of the Indian Hills Addition.

Newbury Living representative Bob Raffery told council members the developer was looking at 24-28 units in one building. The West Des Moines-based company president, Frank Levy, and Rafferty have said their plans here hinge on financing through a Community Development Block Grant.

Rafferty said Monday night applications for the grant money needs ot be in at mid-August and his company needs a commitment that land has been secured.

The public hearing on Aug. 18 will allow local residents to comment on the proposed granting of the option on the land.

At an earlier council meeting one Tama resident expressed reservations about the proposed complex fearing it "could lower property values." It was also reported concerns had been voiced about increased traffic in the area.

Mayor Dan Zimmerman said City Clerk Judy Welch had checked with other communities where Newbury Living had projects and received" good reports" on the company and its operations.

Springfield police raid Worthington Street apartment, arrest 4 men on heroin and cocaine charges

SPRINGFIELD -- Four suspects, squatters in a Worthington Street apartment , were arrested on heroin and cocaine charges Thursday night after police raided the place, a department spokesman said. Narcotics officers executed their warrant at 900 Worthington St ., Suite 3, at about 8:30 p.m., Sgt. John Delaney said. People outside the building yelled out warnings as police initiated their raid. The four men were arrested after police found them hiding inside closets and a bedroom, Delaney, public information officer for the department said. Police seized $1,164 in cash along with heroin and cocaine that was packaged for sale and drug paraphernalia. Arrested were: Daquan Fortune, 27, of 1231 Bay St.; Bradley Davis, 27 ,of 755 Worthington St .; Eric Williams, 25, of 10 Federal Court; and Rysheim Smith, 23, of 317 Peekskill Ave. They were charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
