Why rich New Yorkers are hiding their wealth and privilege

The struggles of the impoverished are well documented. But how about the unique pain and struggle associated with being wealthy in New York City? In her research for “ Uneasy Street : The Anxieties of Affluence” ( Princeton University Press , out Sept. 5), Rachel Sherman interviewed 50 New York-area parents of young children, whose household incomes ranged from $250,000 to $10 million and with assets totaling up to $50 million. These locals live pampered lives — with multiple high-end properties, teams of household employees and frequent, lavish vacations — but still, they do impressive mental gymnastics to avoid identifying themselves as truly rich. For instance: Helen, a stay-at-home mom with an annual family income of $2 million, describes herself as “in the middle, in the sense that there are so many people with so much money. They have private planes. They have drivers. They have all these things.” This kind of creative (and self-serving) logic is prevalent among Sherman’s su

Next-gen kitchens: Three scenarios for home cooks

I’m the resident sci-fi/fantasy nerd here in the Food + Home department. I grew up binging on shows like “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Firefly,” “Battlestar Galactica” and more recently, “Black Mirror” and “Westworld.” If I’m not scouring cookbooks, odds are you’ll find my nose buried in a book by Kim Stanley Robinson , Connie Willis or Octavia Butler. So when the discussion about Future of Food came up, I decided to channel a bit of the “What if?” spirit, imagining three future scenarios of a typical Sunday in a San Francisco home kitchen . How will technological advances impact how we think about and interact with food? Future #1: Science dominates Picture, if you will, a “Jetsons”-like, super-shiny, gadget and convenience-heavy world where 3-D food printers, drone food delivery , laser dishwashers and other interactive, Web- connected smart appliances reign supreme . 7 a.m. The scent of freshly brewed coffee wakes you. In the kitchen, the Coffee Maestro, a home kitchen-frien

Elvis 'pushed to edge' by bodyguards' tell-all book

Just days before he overdosed and collapsed on his toilet, Elvis Presley watched as the world learned the truth about his drug addiction .  And it was the tell-all book that would push Elvis over the edge after years of being hooked on painkillers, his stepbrother David E Stanley has told The Sun. The book, titled Elvis: What Happened?, was written by two men who had once been the closest to the King of Rock and Roll - his bodyguards Sonny and Red West.  For years the two had begged their boss to get treatment for his addiction, worried it would end his life. drug addict popping 60 pills a day is now well-known. Brooklyn Academy of Music Puts Online 70,000 Objects Documenting the History of the Performing Arts: Download Playbills, Posters & More

Yesterday the sad news broke that The Village Voice will discontinue its print edition. Co-founded by Norman Mailer in 1955 and providing New Yorkers with savvy music writing , raunchy advice columns , juicy exposés, reviews, entertainment listings, apartments, jobs, band members, terrible roommates, and pretty much anything else one might desire every week for over half a century, the paper will be missed. Though it won’t disappear online, the loss of the street-level copy in its comfortingly familiar red plastic box marks the abrupt end of an era. Those of us inclined to mourn its passing can take some solace in the fact that so many of the city’s key cultural institutions still persist. Prominent among them, Brooklyn’s Academy of Music, or BAM, has been at it since 1861, when it began as the home of the Philharmonic Society of Brooklyn. It has inhabited its present Beaux Arts building in Fort Greene since 1908. In its 150 years as a performance space for opera, classical, avant

Encounter with ‘characters’ in Things Fall Apart

How it would feel meeting relations of the people who inspired the creation of characters in an epic novel? Evelyn Osagie met those linked with the globally acclaimed Things Fall Apart at Ogidi, Anambra State. As guests made their way into Ogidi Town Hall that afternoon to pay their last respects to the man who was known as the Ikenga and the Ugonabo of Ogidi, the statue of the legendary warrior Ezechuamagha welcomed them with his staff in hand. Little did they know that it was no ordinary statue. He is the town’s progenitor from whom sprang the four quarters of Ogidi-Uru, Akanano, Ikenga and Ezinkwo and nine villages: Uru, Ogidiani, Ezi-Ogidi, Adazi-Ogidi, Nkwelle-Ogidi, Ikenga, Abo-Ogidi, Ire-Ogidi and Umuru in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The town, which has since become a reference point for the literary-minded, continues to inspire those willing to draw inspiration from the ancestral home of the iconic novelist, the late Prof. Chinua Achebe, the Ugo

When Clint Eastwood was challenged to a real-life duel over an affair to remember

As Carmel’s one- time mayor Clint Eastwood began building a legendary film career celebrating models of American male rectitude , he often presented himself as the stalwart family man . But in recent years, even Eastwood admitted that this image didn’t always match reality. Biographies and other accounts portray him as a serial philander who conducted numerous affairs during his 31-year first marriage and in his subsequent relationships. He also fathered at least seven children with five different women. As the now 87-year-old Eastwood prepares to direct his latest film, “The 15:17 to Paris,” one of his affairs has popped up as a new storyline in the popular Hollywood history podcast “You Must Remember This.” The podcast currently focuses on the life and times of one of the women Eastwood reportedly bedded : actress Jean Seberg . If you don’t know Seberg, she’s a screen icon in her own right — but one who died tragically by suicide at age 40 in 1979. She’s most famous as the blonde

Mother, Son Killed In Fire At Coventry Apartments

December 31, 1994 | By LAURA UNGAR; Courant Staff Writer COVENTRY — Three-year-old Jared Brelsford's tiny black bicycle stood outside the charred, icicle- covered apartment building where he and his mother, Lisa, died late Thursday . The two were killed in a three-alarm blaze that left 11 adults and nine children homeless. The fire destroyed their apartment and heavily damaged two of the seven others in the 100-year-old former St. Mary's Church at 62 School St. The Brelsfords -- whose names were confirmed by neighbors and co-workers but not fire or police officials -- were the third and fourth victims of fatal fires in Connecticut this week. Brelsford, 27, lived with her son in an upstairs apartment at 62-D Church Hill Apartments , where the blaze is believed to have started about 10:30 p.m. State and local emergency officials have yet to determine the cause. Neighbors and co-workers who knew the Brelsfords remembered Jared as a friendly, rambunctious preschooler who liked

Davenport ZBA votes against 5-story building in The East Village

Image
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC)- A proposed five story mixed use building will not be going on the corner of River Drive and Mound Streets. The original plan was to have 48 apartments on top of mixed use retail on the first floor. The problem? that five story building is two stories higher than the allowed three stories in The East Village due to Davenport City Code . Thursday Afternoon, the Davenport Zoning Board of Adjustments heard the request from developer Gregg Ontiveros and ultimately voted against the property. Ontiveros says the property must be five stories, instead of three, so he can have a reasonable return on investment. Due to the unstable soil conditions , contractors say the foundation will cost the same for both three and five stories. City staff is required to vote yes or no using 8 different characteristics. The city says the two findings the building fails to meet is that the developer doesn't show that a five story building will make a reasonable r
