Old Marquette School building in South Bend spared from demolition | Education

SOUTH BEND — The city's historic preservation agency Monday rejected a request by South Bend schools officials to demolish the old Marquette School building , a plan that has been in the works for years but has met with resistance from preservationists. The South Bend-St. Joseph County Historic Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the South Bend Community School Corp .'s request to demolish the 1937 building to create more outdoor space for the current Marquette Primary Montessori Academy . Elicia Feasel, the commission's executive director, recommended that the panel deny the request. In a report to the commission, she concluded that the school corporation had failed to prove the types of safety issues that would justify demolishing a local historic landmark . The commission agreed and voted 4-1 to deny the district's request for approval to demolish the building. Several members faulted the school corporation for building the new Marquette school in...

How a little brown book can keep China’s lovers worlds apart

Image
T he way Lai Jie sees it, there are two kinds of relationships. There is romance. And there is marriage. They are not always the same, and in a city such as Shanghai, the deciding factor on who to wed can have little to do with personality, interest or chemistry. It comes down, instead, to a little brown book, the hukou (pronounced hoo-koh ) document, part of a household-registration system that creates distinctions between urban haves and have-nots that influence salaries, education and, it turns out, love lives for huge numbers of migrants. hukou household registration documents , shows journalists her mother’s hukou in the bedroom they share in Beijing on March 10, 2015. Lorie Zapf on short-term vacation rentals: 'Protect neighborhoods'

It’s midnight on a Wednesday and you are trying to sleep, but all you hear is loud party music thumping and rattling your windows. For the third night — just this week — you have been kept awake by the party house next door. This situation is occurring in many of our neighborhoods, prompting residents to call my office pleading for help from the City Council to protect their quality of life and neighborhoods from the constant drumbeat of late night partying . Vacationers are just enjoying the best of San Diego while everyone else in the neighborhood has to get up early for work or school. The issue with short- term vacation rentals is the neighborhoo-altering proliferation in our once quiet neighborhoods. Addressing the issues of short- term vacation rentals and protecting neighborhoods has been one of my top priorities. It is important for readers to understand that we have specific zoning laws that allow for different types of uses in the different areas of the city of San Diego....

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler slow to deliver on promise of affordable housing

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler promised during his 2016 campaign that he would tackle the city's affordable housing crisis if elected. His second day in office, he took over the housing bureau , putting himself in charge of its big decisions on top of his already ambitious workload. But eight months into his term, the mayor has little to show for it. No groundbreakings. A single deal to bring an affordable apartment complex to Northeast Portland . A key policy position on his staff vacant five months after his housing expert quit . He has yet to tell developers what the city will fund if they work to put roofs over needy Portlanders' heads. Wheeler's insistence on painstaking public involvement and the lack of housing expertise on his staff have hampered progress on what he said was an urgent priority. The mayor has also made no decisions about how the city should spend the largest pool of money ever available to address Portland's affordable housing shortage . Wheeler ...

[2] History By the late 19th century , the corridor along East Jefferson Avenue had become a prestigious residential neighborhood . As the automobile age dawned in the twentieth century and Detroit's population boomed, large upscale apartment buildings were constructed along the Avenue. However, this boom in apartment construction collapsed at the start of the Great Depression. However, in 1939, Wesson Seyburn, along with Leonard P. Reaume, of the property management firm of Holden & Reaume, applied for a building permit to construct this apart...
