It’s now occupied by lifelong dry cleaners Marti and Jim Russell, who have owned and operated a business there for the past six years. An instructor and third- generation dry cleaner , Marti Russell is no stranger to the business. She has fond memories of helping her father, a dry cleaner himself, sort through hangers as a kid and worked in his Belmont shop while she attended San Mateo High School . FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- - The city said it's one of the worst apartments in town. The Southmont apartments in South Fayetteville, right off MLK Jr Blvd. have had 4 city ordinance violations in just the last year.  "I can deal with my house flooding, but my kid getting shot..that's where I draw the line," said Kimberly Winner Southmont resident .  Fayetteville police said they've been called to Southmont apartments 7 times, in the past month, for calls of shots fired.  When you're walking around the Southmont apartment complex , you can expect to find everything from broken windows, black mold and even bullet holes in some buildings. The long retail spine of Sydney Road, Brunswick, just north of Melbourne's CBD, was once a prosperous trading outpost on the way to the goldfields. These days it's a bohemian mix of variety stores, op shops, halal butchers and Lebanese bakeries. Take a side street to the west, however, and a different picture emerges. Sandwiched between Sydney Road and the Upfield train line is an area undergoing rapid and widespread transformation. Light industry is fast being replaced by mid- rise apartment buildings , their inhabitants attracted by the short commute into town and cheaper prices than in the city's south-east. The quality of these units is, on the whole, depressingly bad; think poor ventilation and bedrooms that "borrow" natural light (a weasel word for being dark and windowless). Fort Lauderdale 's River Bend Marine Center , which offers boat repair and other services, is getting a $5 million upgrade. The project, including new electricity distribution, new floating docks and other improvements, is set to start in February and take up to eight months to complete. The center's offices and retail shop will remain open, but repairs will completed at nearby marine facilities during the upgrade, said Roger Moore, chief executive of Nautical Ventures Group , which operates the center at 1515 SW 20 t h Street on Marina Mile. "Our landlord decided the 45-year-old marina really needs a face-lift," said Moore, whose company took over the facility two years ago and employs about 40 people there. The modernization comes at time when the boat repair business is growing and changing. River Bend started out in the 1970s handling mostly sailboats and now works mainly on large yachts.
