Cesere | AnnArbor.com The Ann Arbor YMCA is offering free swim and water safety classes at three Ypsilanti apartment complexes this summer following last year’s successful program . Twenty children participated in the 2011 inaugural Ypsi Splash ! Program at Aspen Chase Apartments located at 2960 International Drive. The program has expanded to allow access to more children and includes not only Aspen Chase but the Villas located at 2911 Bynan Dr., and Golfside Lake at 2345 Woodridge Way. They had decided to skip feasting with family in Atlanta to pick up extra hours at their airport jobs loading luggage onto planes. Payday wasn’t until Friday, though, and Leon only had $5 left on his food stamps card . During the three years they spent at Savannah State , Sanders and Leon struggled to pay their tuition, fees and living expenses. They accumulated more than $50,000 in loans between the two of them, despite working up to 40 hours a week. After exhausting themselves working late or overnight shifts so they wouldn’t have to miss class, and finding their grades suffering, they dropped out in 2015, joining a growing pool of Georgians who have debt but no degree. More than 108,000 students who had taken out federal loans withdrew from Georgia’s public colleges and universities bet...

A convoy of Olive Branch Police Department vehicles and motorcycles, along with a large department trailer , all blowing sirens and flashing red and blue lights “invaded” a number of city neighborhoods Tuesday night . The only suspects that the bevy of Olive Branch officers , led by Police Chief Don Gammage , were looking for were as many of the neighborhood residents as possible. The “invasion” was not done to put handcuffs on, but rather give handouts, as in drinks, chips and stuffed toys for the kids, all part of the department’s observance of National Night Out. Each year, law enforcement agencies across the country take time one evening to hold events that gets officers to the community to promote partnerships that make their cities safer. Women’s soccer fans who follow only the U.S. national team might not have heard of Maddy Evans, unless they knew of her when she was growing up in the Philadelphia region . But Evans’ name is very much one worth knowing, because her story says a lot about the present and future of the sport in this country. A 26-year-old product of Abington High and Penn State, Evans retired from playing last week after a five- year pro career . Among the reasons: She couldn’t earn enough money in the job to sustain a living. Evans’ salary this season with the Orlando Pride of the National Women ’s Soccer League was set to be approximately $16,000, just above the league minimum of $15,000. In previous seasons — with the Boston Breakers from 2013 to 2015 and the Pride after that — she received half that sum or less. Players are paid only during the time of year when teams are on the field.
