Illinois-based multifamily developer  Banner Real Estate Group  has the initial support of city staff for its proposed 13-story mixed-use apartment building planned in Downtown Orlando, but has also been put on notice that key design elements must change in the coming months.  Conceptual plans and new renderings for the 13- story building will go before Orlando's Appearance Review Board on Thursday for a courtesy review.  That's being done by the developer, civil engineer  Kimley-Horn  and architect  Baker Barrios  to get valuable early feedback from the ARB and staff on their design, before an eventual Master Plan filing . SHERMAN OAKS >> Barry Cullison stared at a 3-foot- wide tree stump that once bore the weight of a pine at least six stories tall. Across the historic Chase Knolls Garden Apartments where he lives, dozens of other mature trees were being cut down: eucalyptus, ficus, liquidambar, jacaranda, magnolia and more. “It’s heartbreaking,” said Cullison, 70, a retired actor who has lived at the Chase Knolls complex for 21 years. “This can’t be undone. They’ve decimated the trees. The trees are coming down. And all we can do is listen to the chain saws.” Chase Knolls tenants have been fighting to save the “garden” inside the garden apartments . FORT LAUDERDALE , Fla. - A BMW caught fire Tuesday night in a parking garage that is attached to a six- story apartment building in Fort Lauderdale , authorities said. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials said firefighters and police evacuated the building as the fire began to spread. A photo taken at the scene shows the BMW engulfed in flames.  Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the  fire, limiting the damage to the building. Authorities said all residents were able to go back into their homes after the fire was extinguished and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. INDUSTRY GE delays opening of new building in Fort Point General Electric Co. has pushed back the expected opening of its new building overlooking Fort Point Channel by two years after deciding to break the headquarters project into two phases. GE vice president Ann Klee said in a memo Tuesday to Boston employees that executives expect the 12- story building , dubbed South Point , to open in mid-2021, compared with an earlier goal of 2019. Two older brick buildings , together dubbed North Point , will be renovated first, with the aim of opening them in the first half of 2019. GE has already started work on the two old buildings, originally part of a Necco candy manufacturing complex . But construction on the new building was supposed to happen concurrently with much of the Necco renovations. Now, GE will finish the Necco buildings and move employees into them before starting construction of the new building. GE expects it will take 24 months to complete the new structure. The ann...

A grocery store and apartment project planned for downtown would benefit Lawrence and likely deserves economic development incentives , but a low-interest loan from the city shouldn’t be among them. At its meeting Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission will receive an incentives request from the grocery store development group led by Lawrence businessman Mike Treanor . The group is requesting a special financing district , bond agreement and a $2.25 million loan from the city to help complete the $26 million project at Seventh and New Hampshire streets on the site of the former Borders bookstore. The old bookstore will be torn down and replaced with a three-story building with an underground parking garage . The ground floor of the building would house a Price Chopper grocery store and pharmacy, and the upper two floors would house 73 apartments, according to the incentives application.
