A state tax credit that is helping riverside restorations of historic properties in Aurora and Elgin now is set to last through 2021 after Gov. Bruce Rauner approved an extension Friday afternoon . The River Edge Redevelopment Zone Historic Tax Credit program had been set to expire Dec. 31 after lawmakers last year granted it a one- year extension . advertisement But Rauner, while visiting Aurora University on Friday, signed a bill sponsored by several suburban legislators to keep it going another four years. New affordable housing going up in Gulfport - WLOX.com

GULFPORT MS. (WLOX)-- A new tax credit affordable housing apartment complex will soon open in Gulfport. Baywood Place replaces the Baywood apartment units on Switzer Road. To say these are a vast improvement from what was there, would certainly be an understatement. Jesse Billups is with the Mississippi Housing and Development Authority, which is overseeing the work. "These are state of the art units." Billups told WLOX news . "The complex will have a swimming pool, elevators, a computer center, business center and a media room," Billups added. Since these are tax credit apartments , that means the rental rate will be well below the going market rate. Billups expects these one and two bedroom apartments will rent for somewhere between $350 and $550. The development company, out of Texas, is given a tax incentive to build the complex. In return for the tax break, they are required to rent these units for a reduced rate. Billups says those who think this is gover...

Power to the People (Solar Power, That Is)

Image
(Source: Sullivan Solar Power ) By Mark Hughes You may have heard the news: San Diego leads the country in kilowatts of solar panels installed , beating out LA and Honolulu — and by a lot. What’s going on? It’s like cell phones all over again. At first, just a few wealthy cranks have them, but before you know it, everyone and their kid has one. Was there a memo? Or, you’re out for a walk and see that trim, shipshape house you’ve always admired now sports the increasingly fashionable blue/black panels. You put on a brave face, but it’s starting to eat at you: panel envy. The good news is that it’s nothing to be ashamed of and you’re far from alone. Pull up a seat, lie back, and let’s talk. Sure, you know all the valiant reasons for putting panels on your roof: a heroic reduction in greenhouse gas emissi...

Image
UConn’s place in the Hartford skyline . Hartford — For nearly a half-century, the University of Connecticut has had no place to call its own in the state’s capital city. Today that changes as Connecticut’s flagship university opens the doors of its new $140- million downtown branch campus on Prospect Street . The arrival of the campus, which comes after five years of false starts and setbacks, is a milestone for the university and the city of Hartford. Hundreds attended the grand opening ceremony downtown Wednesday morning . For UConn, it marks the institution’s return from the suburbs into the heart of the city – where the school first opened its Greater Hartford branch in 1939. It moved to West Hartford in 1970. The university, in the years since, had been able to continue to claim a “presence” downtown. Some of UConn’s graduate business programs are housed in a space it leases in 100 Constitution Plaza, and the university’s basketball and ice hockey teams play games in the XL ...
