Image
August 24, 2017 Millennials are creating their own definition of financial success . | Jonathan Nackstrand/AFP/Getty Images Facebook knows how you feel about money. The company has been listening in on young people ’s online conversations, as well as analyzing audience data and conducting surveys, in order to learn more about how users between the ages of 21 and 34 think about financial matters. What it discovered is likely to surprise some people, though probably not millennials themselves. “Millennials are misunderstood — famous for their impulse for instant gratification. But when we stop to observe their financial behaviors and listen to them describe their relationship with money in their own words, a new millennial emerges,” according to the report, Millennials and Money: The Unfiltered Journey. ")}; Once you brush aside the stereotype of the lazy and entitled millennial, a picture of a financially responsible generation comes into focus. Millennials want to pay down debt...

Disney on a Budget! - Review of Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort, Orlando

I stayed here with my family of four (kids age 8 and 12) for a week during our 2nd trip to Disney. The resort is about 10-15 minutes from most of the Disney parks making it convenient for our trip. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would stay at this resort again. There are many different pools, slides, lazy rivers and hot tubs around the resort to enjoy. We were disappointed because we were told there was a volleyball court right near our building and we found out later it was taken out some time ago. This was a big deal for two people in our family who were looking forward to playing volleyball. The court is listed as an amenity on the resort website and the concierge showed us on the map when we arrived where we would find it. It was only when we asked one of the maintenance people that we found out it was no longer there. We did not have a lot of time to enjoy the many activities the resort had scheduled each day but there are a lot if that is something you are looking to do. We st...

On Aug. 9, 2007, Lansing police discovered the beaten body of 46-year-old Debra Renfors in her apartment in the 1000 block of North Washington Street . Renfors was the third woman to be bludgeoned to death in the city in two weeks, and a grim reality was beginning to set in. Det. Sgt. Joey Dionise confronted Captain Ray Hall , giving voice to a fear that had been bubbling for days. “Captain,” Dionise said, ”We have a serial killer. Years later, Hall still remembers the “sinking feeling” that accompanied that moment. Ten years ago this month, Lansing was in the grip of a killer who preyed on single women, using whatever was convenient to murder them, and, in some instances, sexually assaulting them. Before police caught him, he had killed five women in just over four weeks. A sixth woman would survive. Matthew Emmanuel Macon , then 27, was eventually convicted of two of the murders, and the assault of the surviving victim. When detectives got Macon in an interview room, it would take ...

Two Scots entries in UK list of ‘happiest places’

The ‘ white sandy beaches ’ of the Hebrides and ‘searching for Nessie’ have been named as two of the UK’s top 30 ultimate ‘happy places’. New research also revealed that the Highlands is the third most popular UK holiday destination , behind Cornwall and the Lake District. The study also found that one in four Britons are of the opinion that there is ‘no place like home’ when it comes to booking holidays . Out of 1,500 people polled, nearly two-thirds said that some of their happiest childhood memories involved holidays in Britain - or ‘staycations’ - and nearly 60 per cent admitted that they were trying to give their children a similar experience. The top five ‘happy place’ experiences in the UK were: 1. Eating a pub lunch in the Cotswolds 2. Hiking in the Lake District 3. Eating an ice cream on Brighton Beach 4. Enjoying fish and chips at Padstow Harbour 5. Admiring the white sandy beaches of the Hebrides Hunting for the elusive Loch Ness Monster , or Nessie, came in at number...

College loan debt leaves some students stranded in the economy

By Sarah Butrymowicz and Meredith Kolodner Alduha Leon and Jared Sanders, roommates at Savannah State University , dined on hot dogs in their apartment on Thanksgiving Day of their sophomore year. They had decided to skip feasting with family in Atlanta to pick up extra hours at their airport jobs loading luggage onto planes. Payday wasn’t until Friday, though, and Leon only had $5 left on his food stamps card . During the three years they spent at Savannah State , Sanders and Leon struggled to pay their tuition, fees and living expenses. They accumulated more than $50,000 in loans between the two of them, despite working up to 40 hours a week. After exhausting themselves working late or overnight shifts so they wouldn’t have to miss class, and finding their grades suffering, they dropped out in 2015, joining a growing pool of Georgians who have debt but no degree. More than 108,000 students who had taken out federal loans withdrew from Georgia’s public colleges and universities bet...

Long Live the King

Back in June I noted that construction fences had gone up around the Burger King at 575 El Camino Real , near Whipple Avenue. After doing some research I wrote about the planned remodel in my post Fact Finding . I was encouraged when, one week later, a large hydraulic excavator and a small tractor appeared on the site; surely demolition was imminent. However, it wasn’t until just a few days ago—some eight weeks later—that demolition began. On Monday of this week, the site looked like this: Whereas on Tuesday it looked like this: This project is billed as a remodel, but as you can see it is a complete teardown and rebuild. When done we will have an all-new Burger King that is smaller than the original and rotated so that the main entrance is towards the back (facing the Caltrain tracks) with the drive-through up against the sidewalk along El Camino. The only plan I could find was attached to a landscaping agreement and thus is somewhat rough, but it clearly shows the new drive-through ...
