Moldy Pegasus Landing apartments not suitable housing, UCF says

May 8, 2010 | By Dave Weber, Orlando Sentinel Complaints of mold in apartments at Pegasus Landing prompted University of Central Florida on Friday to suspend its agreement to use the sprawling complex for student housing . That cuts off the flow of new students to the 744-unit complex on Alafaya Trail. But hundreds of students with leases could be left to fend for themselves if they want to get out of current contracts or contracts for next school year. However, university officials said they would offer "resources, guidance and references" through a telephone hotline and online network. Officials said it's too soon to say how the decision will affect the university housing market for fall semester. About 2, 500 students live in the complex, each paying from $545 to $640 a month on year-round leases. University officials say they have been pressing Capital Project Finance Authority , owners of the 34 apartment buildings about a mile from campus, since February to ...

IDS adapts to industry changes, drops publication to twice a week | Local news

When Hannah Alani found out the Indiana Daily Student was going to reduce its print frequency from five to two days a week, she wasn't upset. As editor-in-chief, Alani had seen her staff struggling to fill a print product that had fewer and fewer advertisements. Desk editors were skipping class to cover events that were barely newsworthy just so there was enough editorial content for the next edition. "The first thing I said was, 'Can we do it now?' Why go two more months?" she said. A printing contract with The Herald-Times and a few prepaid advertisements ensured Indiana University 's 150-year-old student newspaper would continue printing five days a week through the spring 2017 semester. But Alani, after being informed of the decision by student media director Ron Johnson , would be tasked with breaking the news to her staff. She planned to do it during Slash, the regular Friday meeting where the five most recent editions are evaluated and the next fi...

Hidden Houses: The architectural anomaly In Campustown : Culture : Smile Politely

Image
Well before the imposing student apartment complexes towered over Green Street, before the street was alive with coffee shops, restaurants, and bars, and before many of us were alive, Campustown was a neighborhood of homes and small businesses. Turn-of-the- century houses housing professors , U of I faculty, and students shared blocks with intricate fraternity homes and local residences. The streets were small and lined with large trees, streetcars once serviced certain streets, and bars and apartments were almost non-existent. Though our beloved Campustown today is vastly different, vestiges of the area’s first buildings still remain. Champaign-Urbana’s urban fabric is unique among college towns, as the University of Illinois developed between the downtowns, not adjacent to either center city. Instead of growing organically together, Downtown Urbana, Downtown Champaign, and the University all grew differently at their own pace. For this reason, much of the historic architecture i...

The offer, which also waives application and administration fees, is available to thousands of employees who now commute from surrounding counties to work for the town of Chapel Hill , the town of Carrboro, UNC and UNC Health Care , and other state agencies. It could save them a few thousand dollars a year, said Daniel Eller, president and chief executive officer of Eller Residential, a division of Eller Capital Partners . The rent would be $645 a month for a one- bedroom apartment at 86 North – reduced from $795 – and $895 a month for two bedrooms – reduced from $1,095. That would be affordab...

[2] History By the late 19th century , the corridor along East Jefferson Avenue had become a prestigious residential neighborhood . As the automobile age dawned in the twentieth century and Detroit's population boomed, large upscale apartment buildings were constructed along the Avenue.
