Murray factory site becomes home to hundreds of apartments

This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2011, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted. The site of a former brick factory in Murray is being transformed into an urban-style neighborhood. Hundreds of apartments are being built — and hundreds more are coming — as part of the Fireclay development that promises to transform a once-dilapidated side of town. The first phase of the project, Lions Gate at Fireclay, began earlier this year. Renters are expected to arrive by next spring. The next phase, Brick Gate at Fireclay, is scheduled to start next month. Construction will take 20 months. By the time the project is complete, it will have a total of 268 low- income housing units and 400 market-rate apartments. The development at 4400 South and 100 West is a joint venture...

East Design Review Board Delays Capitol Hill Station Development » The Urbanist

Image
Last week the East Design Review Board threw a wrench in plans to begin construction on the complex planned around Capitol Hill Station when they declined to recommend any part of the project, including Capitol Hill Housing ’s planned 110 affordable homes on the B-North site. Board members voiced a variety of concerns, from Kenny Pleasant ’s objections to color palette to the chair Curtis Bigelow ’s concerns about the location of the daycare on Broadway, which he found to be in poor taste or perhaps dangerous. There was also Bigelow’s feeling that the building just hadn’t reached a high enough pinnacle of greatness. “This is a really good building. I think we were expecting it to be a great building,” Bigelow said, as quoted by Brandon Macz in Capitol Hill Times . Capitol Hill Housing ’s Communications Manager Ashwin Warrior said not getting the recommendation last week will certainly delay completion of the affordable housing and increase costs on the non-profit. “We anticipate...

Cleaners carrying torch as community fixture | Local News

With the words well cleaned, well pressed and well dressed hovering in three red arrows above its iconic sign, it’s tough for those passing by Broadway Cleaners in Redwood City to miss it. Built specifically for a dry cleaning business some 57 years ago, the building at 1681 Main St. is a fixture standing where the street dead-ends into El Camino Real . It’s now occupied by lifelong dry cleaners Marti and Jim Russell, who have owned and operated a business there for the past six years. An instructor and third- generation dry cleaner , Marti Russell is no stranger to the business. She has fond memories of helping her father, a dry cleaner himself, sort through hangers as a kid and worked in his Belmont shop while she attended San Mateo High School . Though Marti Russell has logged over 50 years in the business, the stories her customers tell her about the items they are dropping off keep her far from bored. “You just can’t make some of this stuff up,” she said. From helping customers...

The long retail spine of Sydney Road, Brunswick, just north of Melbourne's CBD, was once a prosperous trading outpost on the way to the goldfields. These days it's a bohemian mix of variety stores, op shops, halal butchers and Lebanese bakeries. Take a side street to the west, however, and a different picture emerges. Sandwiched between Sydney Road and the Upfield train line is an area undergoing rapid and widespread transformation. Light industry is fast being replaced by mid- rise apartment buildings , their inhabitants attracted by the short commute into town and cheaper prices than in the city's south-east. The quality of these units is, on the whole, depressingly bad; think poor ventilation and bedrooms that "borrow" natural light (a weasel word for being dark and windowless). The occasional jazzy façade tries feebly to make up for otherwise cheap construction amid a chorus of greys. At ground level, carpark roller doors alternate with mean pocket garden...
