Bloomington Bagel Co. reopens in original space

After being temporarily located on Kirkwood Avenue for almost a year, Bloomington Bagel Co. has returned to its original location at 113 N. Dunn St.  "This week, we've had a lot of parents come in and say they are excited for their kids to come here because this is where they got bagels 20 years ago when they went to IU," said Nate Price-Pressloff, the general manager of BBC.  BBC moved to Kirkwood in November 2016 while the original building was undergoing construction. After 20 years, the building sustained a broken oven and a leaking roof, Sue Aquila, BBC's owner, said. She said she felt it was time to tear down the original building.  It has now been replaced with the new BBC and a micro studio apartment complex named Dunnpark , also owned by Aquila. The complex is made up of 16 units above the bagel shop.  "We never imagined a successful 20-year run and neither did our equipment," Aquila said in a post on the BBC website. The first BBC opened at this ...

These 25 Businesses Will Surprise You With How Old They Are

Katz’s Deli, the iconic New York deli, has been serving its customers for well over 100 years. Getty Images Elon Musk once compared building a business to “eating glass and staring into the abyss of death.” George Orwell, for his part, once described writing a book as a “bout with a long illness,” a sentiment that many entrepreneurs and creatives would agree with. The point is: No one would willingly subject themselves to any of the suffering that goes into building something if they thought their efforts were going to disappear with the wind. Yet the truth is, most businesses and most art does disappear. It might be easier than ever today to start a business—a few bucks on LegalZoom and you’re the CEO of a brand new LLC. What is still hard and what has always been hard it keeping your doors open, staying in business, and keeping customers happy over the long term will never be easy. In a world obsessed with the new and the trendy, we don’t tend to give enough credit to people do ma...

Police beat | TheCabin.net - Conway, Arkansas

From Conway Police Department reports A note on the proceedings Sunday, Aug. 13 at 10 minutes after 2 p.m., police were called to a business on Main Street. Police arrived and found a sticky note on the business’s window upon which was written “[Redacted] Trump.” The note-writer, the officer noted, referred to himself or herself as the “Alt-right” on the same note. On another business, officers spotted another note, and with further investigation found about 10 to 15 notes attached to various local businesses. The notes were not limited to the statement of the first note, but instead included such statements as: “Justice for Muslims, Avenge Cuille,” “ Make Racists afraid again” and “ Protect LGBTQ rights .” Pictures were taken and the specifics on location were recorded. (Post-it notes, as they are labeled by the manufacturer, 3M, are based in the 1968 creation by a 3M researcher who was trying to come up with an especially strong adhesive. In one experiment it was a failure, and the...

The Legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West Endures

Frank Lloyd Wright , Olgivanna Wright (his wife), and their architectural apprentices began traveling to Arizona from Taliesin—Wright’s original Wisconsin home and studio—in the 1920s to consult on the Arizona Biltmore hotel and other projects. A near-fatal bout of pneumonia and the high cost of heating Taliesin during Depression- era winters convinced Wright in 1937 to search for a place to create a desert “camp” where the group could live cheaply and enjoy winter sunshine . Most of the buildings constructed at Taliesin West , as the Arizona location was called, were built by the apprentices under Wright's direction between 1938 and the mid-1950s. “Wright used Taliesin West as an architecture lab where he experimented with materials, forms and technology,” says Stuart Graff, CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation , the nonprofit that oversees both Taliesin locations . “His influence still holds today—how we live, how we build, how we affect the environment.” The apprenti...

10 Facts You May Not Know About Capitol Hill: DCist

Capitol Hill is best known for the eponymous domed building that symbolizes American democracy . But the large neighborhood, which spans the quadrants of Northeast and Southeast, has a lot more going on than legislative dealings. Here are 10 facts about the neighborhood that don’t show up on your average double- decker bus tour . 1. It Was Not Always Called Capitol Hill According to Architect of the Capitol, an organization that maintains the grounds and many of the neighborhood's government buildings , when city architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant found the area in the early 1790s, it was known as Jenkins' Hill. That didn't last much longer. L'Enfant proclaimed it "a pedestal waiting for a monument," and construction atop Capitol Hill began in 1793. The US Capitol Building is located at East Capitol St NE and First St SE. 2. Christ Church (Not the Cathedral) Is the City’s Oldest Episcopal Church The National Cathedral is one of the most famous churches...

Long Live the King

Image
Back in June I noted that construction fences had gone up around the Burger King at 575 El Camino Real , near Whipple Avenue. After doing some research I wrote about the planned remodel in my post Fact Finding . I was encouraged when, one week later, a large hydraulic excavator and a small tractor appeared on the site; surely demolition was imminent. However, it wasn’t until just a few days ago—some eight weeks later—that demolition began. On Monday of this week, the site looked like this: Whereas on Tuesday it looked like this: This project is billed as a remodel, but as you can see it is a complete teardown and rebuild. When done we will have an all-new Burger King that is smaller than the original and rotated so that the main entrance is towards the back (facing the Caltrain tracks) with the drive-through up against the sidewalk along El Camino. The only plan I could find was attached to a landscaping agreement and thus is somewhat rough, but it clearly shows the new drive-through ...
