The long retail spine of Sydney Road, Brunswick, just north of Melbourne's CBD, was once a prosperous trading outpost on the way to the goldfields. These days it's a bohemian mix of variety stores, op shops, halal butchers and Lebanese bakeries. Take a side street to the west, however, and a different picture emerges. Sandwiched between Sydney Road and the Upfield train line is an area undergoing rapid and widespread transformation. Light industry is fast being replaced by mid- rise apartment buildings , their inhabitants attracted by the short commute into town and cheaper prices than in the city's south-east. The quality of these units is, on the whole, depressingly bad; think poor ventilation and bedrooms that "borrow" natural light (a weasel word for being dark and windowless). Aug. 23--DANBURY -- A high- profile apartment complex has hit the market in the city, just as another apartment community with a large price tag has been sold. 1 Kennedy Flats, a 374-unit complex in downtown Danbury built in 2016, is on the market for an undisclosed price, according to the real estate website LoopNet .com. Real estate firm CBRE is the exclusive adviser in the sale, according to the website. An official with Greystar, the owner and developer of 1 Kennedy Flats, confirmed the news and said putting the complex on the market shortly after building it was part of the business plan. "It depends on the capital partner, but often times that's how we develop," Daniel Lee, Greystar's senior director of development for New England said. "It turned out great. Dozens of low-income families being displaced by the closing of the 337- unit Silver Oak Apartments have found new homes, thanks to a hastily put together partnership of Charlotte nonprofits and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Organizers say Community Link and Charlotte Family Housing helped 34 low -income households (115 people) avoid homelessness by placing them in homes. One additional family remains in Silver Oak, but a housing plan is in place for them to move, officials said. Crisis Assistance Ministry provided $15,095 to 15 households that needed help with security and utility deposits to get into new homes. Other partners in the program, including Communities in Schools and A Child’s Place, helped place some children in new schools and identified other students as eligible for homeless aid programs . ABINGTON >> Students living at the Penn State Abington Lions Gate Residence Hall made their way into their new home Aug. 23 between those gathered for the noontime official ribbon -cutting of the new apartment building. The students had moved into the four-story, $50 million, environmentally conscious building for freshmen during the previous two weeks, in time for the Aug. 21 first day of classes at the commonwealth campus. Lions Gate, at 1001 Old York Road, represents “the first of its kind at Penn State to be adjacent to campus,” said Nicole Connell, associate director of strategic marketing. Within walking and biking distance to campus, stores and restaurants, the building, comprising two- and three- bedroom units on coed floors, can house 400, is convenient to public transportation and offers shuttles every 15 minutes to the Abington campus . INDUSTRY GE delays opening of new building in Fort Point General Electric Co. has pushed back the expected opening of its new building overlooking Fort Point Channel by two years after deciding to break the headquarters project into two phases. GE vice president Ann Klee said in a memo Tuesday to Boston employees that executives expect the 12- story building , dubbed South Point , to open in mid-2021, compared with an earlier goal of 2019. Two older brick buildings , together dubbed North Point , will be renovated first, with the aim of opening them in the first half of 2019. GE has already started work on the two old buildings, originally part of a Necco candy manufacturing complex . But construction on the new building was supposed to happen concurrently with much of the Necco renovations. Now, GE will finish the Necco buildings and move employees into them before starting construction of the new building. GE expects it will take 24 months to complete the new structure. The ann...
