How a little brown book can keep China’s lovers worlds apart

T he way Lai Jie sees it, there are two kinds of relationships. There is romance. And there is marriage. They are not always the same, and in a city such as Shanghai, the deciding factor on who to wed can have little to do with personality, interest or chemistry. It comes down, instead, to a little brown book, the hukou (pronounced hoo-koh ) document, part of a household-registration system that creates distinctions between urban haves and have-nots that influence salaries, education and, it turns out, love lives for huge numbers of migrants. hukou household registration documents , shows journalists her mother’s hukou in the bedroom they share in Beijing on March 10, 2015. Ministers respond to Columbus homicides: ‘This is a spiritual problem’

Standing not far from Columbus’ most recent homicide, a group of local ministers bowed their heads in prayer and called for the community to return to God. Members of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance made the plea while holding a news conference at 32nd Street near Fifth Avenue. The location is near apartments where Columbus police arrested a man Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Tamir Harris in the North Highlands neighborhood . Brandon Jarrell Senior , 31, was charged with one count of murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The third Columbus homicide in three days, the shooting drew a crowd to Fourth Avenue before the suspect was in custody. “We are here to express our disdain for for the violence that’s occurring in our community, the anarchy that is so before us,” said the Rev. Ralph Huling, president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance on Thursday. “...

Levittown and the suburban dream of postwar New York

When Johnny came marching home again, there were lots of hurrahs, but precious few apartments. So it was in September 1946 that war veteran Daily Newsman Charles McHarry , who had been living in a hotel room for the five months since his discharge from the Army, reported on Everyman's search for a good $75-a-month apartment, not including bribes to doormen and supers. McHarry figured he could slip somebody $20, but a doorman in the East 50s demanded $75 upfront for the promise of a furnished three-room flat. And the rent would be $125, take it or leave it. McHarry passed . Eventually, a bartender steered him to another place, at just $100, and McHarry quickly accepted . Most of the city's other conquering heroes  and there were 765,000 of them  weren't so lucky. Many found themselves moving back in with their folks, and sometimes they brought new brides with them, sometimes even babies. Others had to make do with whatever they could find  cheap hot...

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler slow to deliver on promise of affordable housing

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler promised during his 2016 campaign that he would tackle the city's affordable housing crisis if elected. His second day in office, he took over the housing bureau , putting himself in charge of its big decisions on top of his already ambitious workload. But eight months into his term, the mayor has little to show for it. No groundbreakings. A single deal to bring an affordable apartment complex to Northeast Portland . A key policy position on his staff vacant five months after his housing expert quit . He has yet to tell developers what the city will fund if they work to put roofs over needy Portlanders' heads. Wheeler's insistence on painstaking public involvement and the lack of housing expertise on his staff have hampered progress on what he said was an urgent priority. The mayor has also made no decisions about how the city should spend the largest pool of money ever available to address Portland's affordable housing shortage . Wheeler ...

The ghost estates that still haunt Ireland

A decade after the crash, Shannon Valley housing estate , on the outskirts of Ballaghaderreen, in Co Roscommon, remains unfinished and partly in ruins. Although the number of “ unfinished housing developments ” has fallen sharply since 2010, Shannon Valley is one of hundreds that still dot the country. The Guls: ‘Every day I put rats in the bin’ Fatima Gul says her little brother, Yousaf, doesn’t like the rats. He jumps up on the sofa or the table in the living room when they come into the house. Their parents don’t allow Fatimar, who is 10, or her nine-year-old sister, Maryam, or Yousaf and his twin, Zohra, who are five, to play near the houses on the other side of their green.
