The Quarters has experienced construction setbacks leading to minor inconveniences for tenants. By Emily Wangen emily-wangen@uiowa.edu A new off- campus housing complex has experienced a long string of setbacks after 14 months of construction because of the weather, officials say. The Quarters, located near Highway 6 East, houses 880 tenants in 352 apartments, with the vast majority being students at the University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College .  Tenants have experienced wiring issues , uninstalled washers and dryers, Wi- Fi connectivity issues , and an unfinished clubhouse. Despite the problems, the complex abided by the fire- life safety requirements by the time tenants moved in, said city senior housing inspector Stan Laverman . Mainstreet Cleveland announced Friday award recipients for the Mainstreet Cleveland Property Enhancement Grant program .  Ten properties in downtown Cleveland were selected to receive grants totaling $54,953.  Based on the investments of these 10 projects, a total of more than $240,000 will be reinvested into downtown properties.     The Mainstreet Cleveland Property Enhancement Grant was formed to encourage building owners and tenants to invest in properties located within the Mainstreet Cleveland footprint by financially assisting with building needs that serve an appropriate public purpose and benefit.   Positive building appearance has been proven to increase property values , improve the marketability of space within the building and attract new businesses, residents and visitors to an area, said officials.  This decision was a difficult one for the grant selection committee , 24 quality applications were submitted.  In fact, the projects were so impressive that the Mainstre...

Utility worker jumps onto subway tracks, saves man just before train’s arrival Last week there was a news account of a woman crashing her car in New England as she swerved off of the road into a tree with an approximate three foot girth and with such force that it broke its top off twenty feet above her car from the impact of her collision. When American doctor Stephen Yoon thinks of North Korea, he does not think of ballistic missile tests or the threat of nuclear war. He remembers instead a 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, who suffered from spastic quadriplegia that made her unable to stand or sit. Five years ago, she went to Yoon's developmental-disability program at Pyongyang Medical University Hospital , where she received treatments from Yoon and his team of local doctors. After almost a year of exercise therapy and some surgeries, she walked out of the hospital on her own. The event was heralded in North Korean state media as a national victory, but it received no notice in the U.S., where few people even know about the roughly 200 Americans like Yoon who work and live under the rule of Kim Jong Un.
