College loan debt leaves some students stranded in the economy

By Sarah Butrymowicz and Meredith Kolodner Alduha Leon and Jared Sanders, roommates at Savannah State University , dined on hot dogs in their apartment on Thanksgiving Day of their sophomore year. They had decided to skip feasting with family in Atlanta to pick up extra hours at their airport jobs loading luggage onto planes. Payday wasn’t until Friday, though, and Leon only had $5 left on his food stamps card . During the three years they spent at Savannah State , Sanders and Leon struggled to pay their tuition, fees and living expenses. They accumulated more than $50,000 in loans between the two of them, despite working up to 40 hours a week. After exhausting themselves working late or overnight shifts so they wouldn’t have to miss class, and finding their grades suffering, they dropped out in 2015, joining a growing pool of Georgians who have debt but no degree. More than 108,000 students who had taken out federal loans withdrew from Georgia’s public colleges and universities bet...

Anchorage’s port is already falling apart. With the clock ticking, who will pay to fix it?

In about 10 years, the docks at the Port of Anchorage will start closing, crippled by corrosion, unless major repairs are made. But with the clock ticking, it's still unclear who will pay for it, and how. Without a big injection of state or federal funding, officials say the port, which opened in 1961, is more likely to resort to a tariff that leads to higher prices on the vast majority of consumer products that come into the state. That means everyone would pay a little more for a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, a car or a sheet of plywood. A scary incident at the port earlier this summer accentuated warnings about its condition. At 7 a.m. June 26, the Holland America cruise ship MS Amsterdam docked at the port. Waves kicked up by the ship while it was docking broke the severely corroded underwater base of two columns holding up the port — causing a 57,000- pound dock fender to break off and sink into the adjacent berth. Corroded metal pipes , part of a fender ...

CHESTER >> Gov. Tom Wolf took a tour of Power Home Remodeling ’s new 100,000-square-foott headquarters in the Wharf at Rivertown Wednesday as part of his “Jobs That Pay” Tour, saying don’t count out this industry as innovative. Formed in a Wilmington, Del., apartment in 1992, Power Home Remodeling moved to the first and second floors of the former Peco building in 2011. However, it outgrew its space and took its operations up a few flights in January to the third and fourth floors, with anticipation of expanding into the fifth floor as well. The company is one of the largest exterior home remodelers and provides windows, siding, roofing, doors, solar and insulation for residential homes. Many of their products are exclusively made for Power and are featured at BJ’s and Sam’s Clubs. On Wednesday, Power Home executives showed Wolf their new digs. As UConn returns, a chapter in Hartford’s history is completed

Image
UConn’s place in the Hartford skyline . Hartford — For nearly a half-century, the University of Connecticut has had no place to call its own in the state’s capital city. Today that changes as Connecticut’s flagship university opens the doors of its new $140- million downtown branch campus on Prospect Street . The arrival of the campus, which comes after five years of false starts and setbacks, is a milestone for the university and the city of Hartford. Hundreds attended the grand opening ceremony downtown Wednesday morning . For UConn, it marks the institution’s return from the suburbs into the heart of the city – where the school first opened its Greater Hartford branch in 1939. It moved to West Hartford in 1970. The university, in the years since, had been able to continue to claim a “presence” downtown. Some of UConn’s graduate business programs are housed in a space it leases in 100 Constitution Plaza, and the university’s basketball and ice hockey teams play games in the XL ...

These 25 Businesses Will Surprise You With How Old They Are

Katz’s Deli, the iconic New York deli, has been serving its customers for well over 100 years. Getty Images Elon Musk once compared building a business to “eating glass and staring into the abyss of death.” George Orwell, for his part, once described writing a book as a “bout with a long illness,” a sentiment that many entrepreneurs and creatives would agree with. The point is: No one would willingly subject themselves to any of the suffering that goes into building something if they thought their efforts were going to disappear with the wind. Yet the truth is, most businesses and most art does disappear. It might be easier than ever today to start a business—a few bucks on LegalZoom and you’re the CEO of a brand new LLC. What is still hard and what has always been hard it keeping your doors open, staying in business, and keeping customers happy over the long term will never be easy.
