Long Island Index pushes for more in-home rental apartments

A Long Island research group is urging local governments to consider allowing more rental apartments in private homes, to help cash-strapped homeowners and provide more housing for renters. In a report released Saturday , the Long Island Index outlines the vast differences in the ways Long Island ’s towns, cities and villages deal with so- called accessory apartments , or small units within owner-occupied homes. Most Popular The approaches range from fairly accepting — as in the Town of Babylon, where homeowners can get permits to rent out apartments if they meet certain conditions — to strict, as in the Town of North Hempstead , where such units can only be occupied by the homeowner’s parent or child. Long Island has a patchwork of rules for accessory apartments , which vary so widely that many homeowners fear getting penalized, so they don’t even try to create apartments, even if they want to and might be allowed, said Nancy Rauch Douzinas , publisher of the Index. The Index is a...

200 Americans Living in North Korea Must Get Out by Sept. 1

Image
When American doctor Stephen Yoon thinks of North Korea, he does not think of ballistic missile tests or the threat of nuclear war. He remembers instead a 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, who suffered from spastic quadriplegia that made her unable to stand or sit. Five years ago, she went to Yoon's developmental-disability program at Pyongyang Medical University Hospital , where she received treatments from Yoon and his team of local doctors. After almost a year of exercise therapy and some surgeries, she walked out of the hospital on her own. The event was heralded in North Korean state media as a national victory, but it received no notice in the U.S., where few people even know about the roughly 200 Americans like Yoon who work and live under the rule of Kim Jong Un. Carefully monitored by the regime, they have come and gone for years, doing educational, medical or infrastructural work, and sometimes raising families in a nation that has been officially at war with the ...

Difference between housing society and apartments owners association and condominium

The meaning of Condominium is a Building or Complex of Buildings containing a number of individually owned Apartments or houses. Though this concept isvery old one of ownership for buildings in Mumbai, it is the Co- operative Housing Society model which has been and even today, is the most popular and preferred so far. Buyers who purchase premises on an 'ownership' basis require to come together to manage the building and for that purpose, one of the ways is to form a Co- operative Society , which is regulated by the Maharashtra Co- operative Societies Act , 1960. An alternative to a Co- operative Housing Society was introduced by the Maharashtra Apartment Ownership Act , 1970, which provides for the formation of a Condominium. The buyers of premises in a Condominium are called Apartment owners who form an association known as an 'Association of Apartment Owners ' in case of both i.e. residential as well as non-residential premises. The meaning of...

GAME OF THRONES’ Most Exciting Season Has Been Its Worst (But We Know How to Fix It)

Image
Game of Thrones seventh season started with one of the most powerful scenes in show history. It looked like retribution for the Red Wedding would be limited to Arya killing Walder Frey , so watching her poison those responsible exceeded even our wildest expectations. Unfortunately that incredible scene was not a harbinger of things to come, because while this season has arguably been Game of Thrones ‘ most exciting, it has also been its worst. The show’s creators have made plenty of mistakes over the years (some major), but these bad decisions and episodes of  poor judgment felt more like swing-and-a-miss-es, not bona fide laziness . Through the first 60 episodes, only two things stood out as being either unforgivably inane or bad TV tropes: Jaime and Bronn’s absurd plot to sneak into Dorne, and a lot of “The Battle of the Bastards.” They stood out because of how rare those illogical moments were from the show. But poor writing has defined this current season, with a consistency of ...
