The letter to Kushner Companies came in response to a May 23 article co-published by ProPublica and The New York Times Magazine investigating management practices at the rental complexes, most of which are in the suburbs of Baltimore, as well as an article this week in The Baltimore Sun that revealed additional details . A Long Island research group is urging local governments to consider allowing more rental apartments in private homes, to help cash-strapped homeowners and provide more housing for renters. In a report released Saturday , the Long Island Index outlines the vast differences in the ways Long Island ’s towns, cities and villages deal with so- called accessory apartments , or small units within owner-occupied homes. So it was in September 1946 that war veteran Daily Newsman Charles McHarry , who had been living in a hotel room for the five months since his discharge from the Army, reported on Everyman's search for a good $75-a-month apartment, not including bribes to doormen and supers. As the Charlotte Housing Authority moves forward with plans to redevelop the aging Tall Oaks subsidized housing in the fast- gentrifying Cherry neighborhood , the last two families there say they can’t move out, in part because of improper evictions from CHA on their records. Most of the buildings at Tall Oaks, a 50- unit housing complex owned by CHA on Cherry Street near the Metropolitan shopping complex , have already been torn down. In its place, CHA is developing 81 units of new subsidized housing . The next phase of the project could include building up to 200 units of “ workforce housing ” for families making $38,500‐$77,040. It's a housing development where the homes, roads, stores and other features are carefully designed and orchestrated to make living there as convenient and enjoyable as can be. For instance: Shopping centers may be deliberately situated within walking distance of planned community homes , which are typically attached—condos, townhouses, apartments—to make travel by foot manageable. Trees and flowers are planted alongside most streets, along with hiking/biking trails. High-speed commuter rails whisk workers to nearby urban centers  for their 9-to-5 jobs.
