Total solar eclipse: When will Austin get one?

Image
Visible total solar eclipses seem to be somewhat of a rarity in Austin, from what we could find. The 65 percent of The Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017 we just saw was pretty darn cool and spooky, but many Austinites are wondering when we’ll get a chance to see a total solar eclipse from home sweet home . The answer to that question, according to NASA, is April 8, 2024. The eclipse will last from 5:17 p.m. to 7:58 p.m. CDT, and will peak at 6:36 p.m. with a total eclipse that lasts about a minute. We can’t say that it’s never too early to start planning your 2024 eclipse parties (do solar eclipse glasses have an expiration date? Will it be cloudy or raining in April 2024, as it frequently can be in the Austin springtime?). However, it’s a good idea mark your calendars so as not to be surprised when the skies go dark in the middle of the day. 2024 total eclipse path Eclipse Predictions by Fred Espenak, NASA's GSFC/WIkimedia Commons Meanwhile, one year prior to that, on ...

Why didn't Buckingham Palace fly flag half mast for Diana?

They were the seven days that shook the world, from the death of Princess Diana to her funeral at Westminster Abbey.  In this poignant series to mark the 20th anniversary, Jonathan Mayo reconstructs those momentous events as they happened though the eyes of Royal Family members , politicians, the Princess’s family, and a heartbroken public . . . Monday, September 1, 12.15am Paris time/ 11.15pm UK time  Jill and Ernie Rees-Jones are walking down the Champs-Élysées in Paris to get some air. Their son Trevor, the Princess’s bodyguard and sole survivor of the crash that killed her, is lying unconscious in the nearby Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital. There is huge media and public interest in Trevor’s recovery, as his memories may unlock the cause of the crash. Suddenly a car races towards them, and Ernie pushes Jill out of its way just in time. He kicks the car as it passes and yells at the driver. But Jill can see the funny side: if she’d been hit, she could’ve ended up in a bed next to Trev...

Review board unsatisfied with Capitol Hill transit development project

There were many aspects of the four- site Capitol Hill transit - oriented development the East Design Review Board liked, but confidence was not high enough to clear it for permitting on Wednesday. Situated above the light rail station , the transit- oriented development will be Capitol Hill’s largest construction project to date, creating more than 400 apartment units in a superblock that borders Broadway , 10th Avenue, East John Street and East Denny Way. Each of the four buildings will be seven stories. Three will provide around 20 percent of their apartment units at affordable levels, while the Capitol Hill Housing B-North site will include 110 units at affordability rates of 30-60 percent of the area median income . The East Design Review Board ’s last assessment of the development, which is being led by Portland- based Gerding Edlen Development (GED), was in December. Board members agreed developers responded to the guidance provided at that time, but didn’t feel every r...
