How Sweep It Is: Scrappers earn 3-game lead over West Virginia

Related Coverage YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Nearly 13,000 students are coming back to Youngstown State ’s campus for the start of fall classes and there’s been an increase in the number of new students. Family, classes, and convenience — just three of the reasons students say they come to YSU. Many things have changed at the university but excitement for the first day of classes has stayed the same. There are 2,300 new freshmen on campus this fall — an increase from last year and one of the largest freshman classes in three decades. Swegan said that’s because people are more aware and concerned about the cost of college and debt. “We’re sitting here in the State of Ohio with the most reasonably-priced tuition. I think people are seeing the value.” Student Jeffery Logan said he loves the party-like atmosphere. “Everything is awesome, man, it’s really cool.” His friend, Brittany Schnellbach, said she’s ready for class, too. “This is my last first day. There’s a lot of stuff going on her...

Bruins win 8-1 against Cal State Bakersfield in second exhibition game

The commentator announced the second goal incorrectly in Sunday’s women’s soccer exhibition game , saying the person who assisted on the goal was the one who scored. Luckily, he got a chance to redeem himself. He announced the third goal correctly, and the fourth and the fifth. By the time UCLA finished with an 8-1 win over Cal State Bakersfield , the mistake had long been forgotten. It was one of the few that were made the entire game. Two nights before, the Bruins only scored one goal in their opening exhibition game against Canada FISU. On Sunday night, scoring clearly wasn’t the problem. “We were a lot more consistent with our finishing, and I think it showed,” said freshman midfielder Olivia Athens , who scored early in the second period. The Bruins scored two goals in the first 30-minute period, two in the second, and finished the final period with a four goal onslaught. When they weren’t scoring, they were constantly pushing the ball toward the net, with 21 shots on goal. “It ...

College loan debt leaves some students stranded in the economy

By Sarah Butrymowicz and Meredith Kolodner Alduha Leon and Jared Sanders, roommates at Savannah State University , dined on hot dogs in their apartment on Thanksgiving Day of their sophomore year. They had decided to skip feasting with family in Atlanta to pick up extra hours at their airport jobs loading luggage onto planes. Payday wasn’t until Friday, though, and Leon only had $5 left on his food stamps card . During the three years they spent at Savannah State , Sanders and Leon struggled to pay their tuition, fees and living expenses. They accumulated more than $50,000 in loans between the two of them, despite working up to 40 hours a week. After exhausting themselves working late or overnight shifts so they wouldn’t have to miss class, and finding their grades suffering, they dropped out in 2015, joining a growing pool of Georgians who have debt but no degree. More than 108,000 students who had taken out federal loans withdrew from Georgia’s public colleges and universities bet...
