Florida slaying puts spotlight on possible neo-Nazi plot as details emerge

Image
The slayings of two young men in Florida, allegedly at the hands of their roommate, has exposed disturbing evidence of a credible neo-Nazi threat to public safety, federal investigators say. Devon Arthurs, the 19-year-old co-founder of the obscure neo-Nazi group "Atomwaffen Division," was arrested in the May 19 fatal shooting of his roommates, 18-year-old Andrew Oneschuk and 22-year-old Jeremy Himmelman . At the time of the arrest, officials said Arthurs claimed he killed Oneschuk and Himmelman to thwart a domestic terrorist attack by Atomwaffen, which is German for “atomic weapon.” “I prevented the deaths of a lot of people,” Arthurs said in a rambling statement, according to officials. Asked why his roommates planned such an attack, he said, “Because they want to build a Fourth Reich.” Related Image undated photo provided by Kianna Kaizer, shows Jeremy Himmelman and his girlfriend Kianna Kaizer . Himmelman was fatally shot along with his friend Andrew Oneschuk , 18, b...

Lorie Zapf on short-term vacation rentals: 'Protect neighborhoods'

It’s midnight on a Wednesday and you are trying to sleep, but all you hear is loud party music thumping and rattling your windows. For the third night — just this week — you have been kept awake by the party house next door. This situation is occurring in many of our neighborhoods, prompting residents to call my office pleading for help from the City Council to protect their quality of life and neighborhoods from the constant drumbeat of late night partying . Vacationers are just enjoying the best of San Diego while everyone else in the neighborhood has to get up early for work or school. The issue with short- term vacation rentals is the neighborhoo-altering proliferation in our once quiet neighborhoods. Addressing the issues of short- term vacation rentals and protecting neighborhoods has been one of my top priorities. It is important for readers to understand that we have specific zoning laws that allow for different types of uses in the different areas of the city of San Diego....

Clyde Crabtree Sr. | A Life Remembered

BIG POOL — Clyde W. Crabtree Sr. was a quiet, soft-spoken man whose humble nature belied an interesting career. His work took him far from his modest beginnings in Western Maryland , even though he never lived more than 150 miles from where he began. Clyde was born and raised in an era where technical training was on the job — carpentry in his case. It was through that training that Clyde got a job with the Department of the Army and worked at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery . A self-described jack-of-all-trades, Clyde did carpentry and maintenance work, and closed off roads for funeral processions. No matter when it snowed, Clyde was expected to help keep the cemetery roads plowed , and clear a path at the Tomb of the Unknowns and the eternal flame at President John F. Kennedy's grave. He helped build the space shuttle Challenger memorial gazebo , and was involved with the burial of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis . Clyde and his co-workers removed the granite stones around Preside...

The Open-Floor-Plan Backlash: How Family Members Are Escaping Each Other

Image
IN THE 1960s and ’70s, long before helicoptering emerged as a parenting style, adults had far less interest in looming over their children, frequently urging them to go play outside or downstairs. The netherworld to which these parents pointed was usually a recreation room or finished basement, clad insipidly in wood-veneer paneling and linoleum. Furnishings typically included a saggy sofa, a scratched ping-pong table and a built-in bar never used for mixing drinks; instead, the kids commandeered it as a make-believe store or a stage for puppet shows. Not even Dad’s novelty naked- lady martini stirrers lured him down once the children moved in. And the closest Mom got was to stand at the top of stairs and yell, “Supper’s ready! Wash your hands!” Perhaps these ratty rec rooms weren ’t worthy of House Beautiful, but the stints of physical distance they offered parents and offspring arguably benefited both in ways today’s airy cathedral-ceiling’d great rooms can’t. These days, peopl...

'Who are they building that for?' | Local News

Leonnel Davis sees change in Rochester and wonders what it means for her new neighbors. "I see growth in the community but not growth around where I live," she said. Up until about three months ago, Davis was living in a home in northeast Rochester, which she was hoping to buy through a contract for deed. However a pending divorce changed her plans, and she moved with her two grandchildren, one 12 and the other 15, to a three-bedroom apartment in the Andover Apartments complex in southeast Rochester. It wasn't the first choice for the 53-year-old grandmother, but searches for three-bedroom apartment kept coming with price tags as high as $1,900 a month in buildings near the city's core. "Who are they building that for? They couldn't be building it for me," she said, noting she pays $900 for rent in her new apartment as she points to needed repairs and cites safety concerns . "I'm on disability, and I'm a single grandparent....

Read more oral histories like it in Chasing the Harvest by Gabriel Thompson (2017 Verso Press). Read our interview with Thompson here. Farmwork is often a family affair. Parents bring their children to labor alongside them in the fields. Workers learn about a job opening and tell their relatives, the word spreading quickly from uncle to aunt to cousin. If a crew sticks together long enough, it may find that most members are related to each other in one way or another. Such is the case for the crew of the Arroyo- Hernandez family . Maria and Pedro came to the United States in 1994, 10 days after getting married in Mexico. Their plan was to stay for a couple of years, save money, and return to Mexico to open a business. Then they had their first child, Guadalupe, and those plans changed. For more tha...
