Next parking expansion in downtown Ann Arbor could start in 2018

ANN ARBOR, MI - The next expansion of downtown Ann Arbor 's public parking system could start next spring and be completed by the end of 2019 if there's political support for it. Downtown Development Authority leaders are continuing to discuss adding hundreds more parking spaces by expanding the garage at Ann and Ashley streets, taking it from six to nine stories. At their last meeting in July, DDA board members were presented with an estimated timeline indicating construction drawings , along with site plan approval from the City Council, could be done by January 2018, with the project going out to bid after that. The estimated construction time is 12 to 14 months. The timeline presented to the DDA board assumes construction delays and shows contractor selection could happen in May 2018, with construction lasting through December 2019. It's assumed the contractor would stage construction to allow patrons to use the garage while the work is being done. The Ann/A...

Wilmington ranked among best small cities in America

Once dubbed  Murder Town, USA, the city of Wilmington is now considered one of America's best small cities. The online lifestyle site thrillist .com enlisted help from dozens of writers across the country to help collate a list of the 15 best small cities with max populations of 70,000 to move to, before they get too popular. " We looked for up-and-coming hotspots (think, Asheville 10 years ago ), underappreciated gems, and towns where a person with verve could scratch out a cool life," the article read.  While Wilmington's population came in a smidge above the population limit, with 71,000 residents, it still made the cut. "Delaware's biggest city has  undergone massive changes in the last decade," the article read. " Major financial institutions -- J.P. Morgan, Barclays, BlackRock -- have shifted jobs to Wilmington, sending an influx of young professionals (and their salaries) that has breathed new life into the city's cultural landmark...

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler slow to deliver on promise of affordable housing

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler promised during his 2016 campaign that he would tackle the city's affordable housing crisis if elected. His second day in office, he took over the housing bureau , putting himself in charge of its big decisions on top of his already ambitious workload. But eight months into his term, the mayor has little to show for it. No groundbreakings. A single deal to bring an affordable apartment complex to Northeast Portland . A key policy position on his staff vacant five months after his housing expert quit . He has yet to tell developers what the city will fund if they work to put roofs over needy Portlanders' heads. Wheeler's insistence on painstaking public involvement and the lack of housing expertise on his staff have hampered progress on what he said was an urgent priority. The mayor has also made no decisions about how the city should spend the largest pool of money ever available to address Portland's affordable housing shortage . Wheeler ...
