In Exton area, an explosion of building activity

WEST WHITELAND >> Call it the development of Exton, 2.0. The area is undergoing a renewed interest with development that has the township buzzing with new projects. From a new supermarket – a Whole Foods, which the township has been told will open in January – to a post- operation rehabilitation facility , with plenty of housing in between, the Exton area is a hot spot for building again with more than 20 projects in the ground or on the drawing board. “There’s a lot happening now,” observed Mimi Gleason , West Whiteland ’s township manager. “A lot of it is because of the economy, the pent-up demand, and a lot of it is because the three supervisors we have now wanted to encourage redevelopment.” Advertisement The completion of the Exton Square Mall in 1973 helped put the Exton area on the map and through the decades leading up to the 2008 Great Recession the township saw steady growth with the development of other retail centers like Whiteland Towne Center , Fairfie...

For College Terrace Market, a shaky start | News

College Terrace Market , the longed-for grocery store at 2100 El Camino Real in Palo Alto, finally opened on June 14, but the hoped-for crowds of customers have been slow to materialize. After a promising opening day , the market initially averaged only about 60 customers a day, said Ron Jensen, the market's director of operations. In the last couple of weeks, that number has grown as employees have moved into the First Republic Bank offices in the center's upper floors. But Miki Werness, one of the market's partners, estimated the market needs more than 200 customers per day to thrive. He said he did not anticipate that a summer opening would be so slow, adding that he anticipates many more customers will come with the start of the school year. The shaky start — and other factors potentially conspiring against the market — has customers and neighbors in College Terrace concerned . Under the planned community (PC) ordinance by which the College Terrace Centre devel...

Escondido- based nonprofit Community HousingWorks teamed up with the city to build Solara Apartments on the southwest corner of Community Road and Hilleary Place, just south of Hilleary Park. The $16.5 million, 3- acre project added 55 apartments to the city's supply of housing for low- and very- low income people . Contractors are still putting finishing touches on the complex's landscaping. Community HousingWorks asset manager Rosemary Stabrawa said Monday, however, that Solara's first residents moved in over the weekend, and more are expected to follow by the end of this week. All the development's tenants should be in their new homes by the end of the month, she said. "Approximately jubilant," Stabrawa said, describing her mood while handing out Solara apartment keys . Denver Investor Looks To Kansas City's River Market For His Development 'Play'

Craig Slawson knows a lot about oil exploration, a business his family has been in for 60 years. In that industry, when you find a "play," you’ve identified a geological region where conditions are ripe for discovering oil fields , lots of them. Now that he’s expanded into real estate, the Denver-based founder of Epoch Developments believes he’s located a promising new "play" for that business in the River Market. He’s going in big, buying 10 historic buildings on the west side of a three-block stretch of Delaware Street between 3rd Street and Independence Avenue, and nearby property along Wyandotte as well. “What caught my eye in Kansas City is the same thing we see in Denver, just seven years behind,” Slawson said. “ People enjoy higher density areas with vintage buildings and clean and safe streets. I decided it was time to look at Kansas City. Once the streetcar initiative passed , I started to look harder. “The streetcar was the catalyst for me.” And at ...

As UConn returns, a chapter in Hartford’s history is completed

Image
UConn’s place in the Hartford skyline . Hartford — For nearly a half-century, the University of Connecticut has had no place to call its own in the state’s capital city. Today that changes as Connecticut’s flagship university opens the doors of its new $140- million downtown branch campus on Prospect Street . The arrival of the campus, which comes after five years of false starts and setbacks, is a milestone for the university and the city of Hartford. Hundreds attended the grand opening ceremony downtown Wednesday morning . For UConn, it marks the institution’s return from the suburbs into the heart of the city – where the school first opened its Greater Hartford branch in 1939. It moved to West Hartford in 1970. The university, in the years since, had been able to continue to claim a “presence” downtown. Some of UConn’s graduate business programs are housed in a space it leases in 100 Constitution Plaza, and the university’s basketball and ice hockey teams play games in the XL ...
