(Photo: Romain Blanquart/ Detroit Free Press ) Buy Photo An unprecedented building boom of apartment high -rises and condos has made construction cranes a lingering fixture of the Ann Arbor skyline . No fewer than six cranes hovered over downtown last week as private developers raced to erect more luxury student and post-collegiate housing within walking distance to University of Michigan classrooms. The half- dozen residential projects that are under construction or slated to begin are the latest round in a boom that has been under way for at least three years and is permanently altering the city's housing situation. Many of the current and earlier developments specifically cater to U-M students, offering additional near- campus living options aside from blocks of grubby old houses. Other projects have ta...

Massive Renovation Helps Fountain Place Secure 500,000 SF in Renewals

May 25, 2017— A number of major renovation projects are in the works along Ross Avenue in downtown Dallas . Arguably the most significant is the redevelopment of Fountain Place , where owner Goddard Investment Group was the first to kick off activity in this cycle. The $ 70 million renovation includes office tower enhancements and a new 10-story garage with four plaza- level restaurants at its base. Additionally, AMLI Residential is developing a stunning new 45-story, luxury apartment high -rise at the corner of Field Street and Munger Avenue. The redevelopment of Fountain Place has been a key factor in securing renewals from five major office tenants . The latest to recommit is Bracewell LLP , whic¬h recently extended its lease for nearly 40,000 square feet. This follows renewals from Wells Fargo (123,650 square feet) and Gerald Ray (11,500 square feet) earlier this year. The first two big tenants to recommit were Tenet Healthcare (240,000 square feet) and Hunton & Williams...

Why rich New Yorkers are hiding their wealth and privilege

The struggles of the impoverished are well documented. But how about the unique pain and struggle associated with being wealthy in New York City? In her research for “ Uneasy Street : The Anxieties of Affluence” ( Princeton University Press , out Sept. 5), Rachel Sherman interviewed 50 New York-area parents of young children, whose household incomes ranged from $250,000 to $10 million and with assets totaling up to $50 million. These locals live pampered lives — with multiple high-end properties, teams of household employees and frequent, lavish vacations — but still, they do impressive mental gymnastics to avoid identifying themselves as truly rich. For instance: Helen, a stay-at-home mom with an annual family income of $2 million, describes herself as “in the middle, in the sense that there are so many people with so much money. They have private planes. They have drivers. They have all these things.” This kind of creative (and self-serving) logic is prevalent among Sherman’s su...

Ankita Nair: New students need to be taught the importance of sleep at orientation

For the nearly 9,000 incoming first-year and transfer students preparing to matriculate at UCLA, getting a good night’s sleep is probably the last thing on their minds. High school students are long accustomed to sacrificing sleep in order to maintain high academic standing and extracurricular involvement. But students who continue to practice the same habits in college risk endangering their long- term academic performance and personal health . According to a study conducted by University of Alabama, 60 percent of college students get insufficient amounts of sleep, less than the amount recommended by the National Sleep Foundation for young adults, which is seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Furthermore, studies done by Harvard University show that sleep deprivation can cause poor memory, impair judgement and affect students’ abilities to learn and retain information. This issue has not been lost on UCLA, though. The university’s Healthy Campus Initiative runs the Sleep We...

House Tour: A Contemporary, Classic Cape Town Rental

Name: Melissa and James Lawrence Location: Vredehoek, Cape Town, South Africa Size: 1184 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, renting Cape Town- based interior designer Melissa and her husband James didn 't want to invest a ton of money in this home since they are renting it. But because Melissa is in the interior design field , they knew exactly what could to be done to enhance the space and in a cost effective way. They've been able to cleverly add their own touches to their rental apartment , creating a space that feels like home. The first task was to tackle the flooring, which was originally dark brown and in a poor condition. The light whitewashed floors that you see now required a lot of work, but the result is a brighter, more contemporary look they both love. Melissa and James love entertaining so updating the kitchen was a must — and the space needed a major overhaul and some serious TLC. The cupboards were originally a mix of dark wood and grubby white, an...

The Lasting Legacy of Victoria's Secret Love Spell Fragrance

When Kanye West references your product in his lyrics, that's how you know you've made it. The product in question? Victoria's Secret Love Spell —the scent that was immortalized in West's hit "Take One for the Team," continues to be one of those fragrances you recognize immediately, and for many of us, can be counted as one of the first "big girl" perfumes we veered toward after retiring the bottles of Juice Bar and Body Fantasies for good. You know it, you loved it, and you probably have a half-used bottle stashed away somewhere in your apartment.  "We created the fragrance back in 1999, and when we were developing it, a lot of the scents out there were overtly fruity in a singular, condensed way—like a sole apple, a pear, or peach—so we wanted to do something that wasn't as one-dimensional," says Mark Knitowski, Victoria's Secret SVP of Product Innovations. "We certainly thought there was something special about it, but we co...

CHESTER >> Gov. Tom Wolf took a tour of Power Home Remodeling ’s new 100,000-square-foott headquarters in the Wharf at Rivertown Wednesday as part of his “Jobs That Pay” Tour, saying don’t count out this industry as innovative. Formed in a Wilmington, Del., apartment in 1992, Power Home Remodeling moved to the first and second floors of the former Peco building in 2011. However, it outgrew its space and took its operations up a few flights in January to the third and fourth floors, with anticipation of expanding into the fifth floor as well. The company is one of the largest exterior home remodelers and provides windows, siding, roofing, doors, solar and insulation for residential homes. Many of their products are exclusively made for Power and are featured at BJ’s and Sam’s Clubs. On Wednesday, Power Home executives showed Wolf their new digs.
