Situated above the light rail station , the transit- oriented development will be Capitol Hill’s largest construction project to date, creating more than 400 apartment units in a superblock that borders Broadway , 10th Avenue, East John Street and East Denny Way. (CNN) — An abandoned castle always cuts an impressive figure -- a blast from the past submerged behind ruined walls. Says author Kieron Connolly , whose new book " Abandoned Castle s" explores the world's most spectacular forgotten fortresses , they're also windows on long gone civilizations. "Societies are like a body: centuries go by and the body decays," he tells CNN Travel . "The castle's like the skull or like the teeth, in fact they even look a bit like teeth, sticking out, out of the ground. They give us some clues, some entries into the past." Connolly's book features castles from around the world and across the ages -- including 19th century military forts in the French Alps, 13th century castles in the Scottish Highlands and a medieval fortress in Syria. The long retail spine of Sydney Road, Brunswick, just north of Melbourne's CBD, was once a prosperous trading outpost on the way to the goldfields. These days it's a bohemian mix of variety stores, op shops, halal butchers and Lebanese bakeries. Take a side street to the west, however, and a different picture emerges. Sandwiched between Sydney Road and the Upfield train line is an area undergoing rapid and widespread transformation. Light industry is fast being replaced by mid- rise apartment buildings , their inhabitants attracted by the short commute into town and cheaper prices than in the city's south-east. The quality of these units is, on the whole, depressingly bad; think poor ventilation and bedrooms that "borrow" natural light (a weasel word for being dark and windowless). With the Wilshire Grand Center open and a 66- story tower recently proposed for Ninth and Figueroa streets, the sky-high action in Downtown Los Angeles continues : Developer Crescent Heights has unveiled plans and renderings for a 70- story South Park building that would have 794 apartments. The Wine Institute estimates that nearly 24 million people visit the 4,653 wineries in California’s wine regions each year. That tourism's economic impact in the state, which last year totaled $57.6 billion, includes a robust hospitality and lodging market. While construction slowed a bit last year, there were 26 hotels with 2,204 rooms in the planning stages for northern California’s vineyard- rich Sonoma County , and 13 hotels with 1,621 rooms being planned for Napa Valley, according Atlas Hospitality Group ’s 2016 California Hotel Development Survey .
