What Is a Planned Community? A Place With Surprising Perks

What is a planned community? It's a housing development where the homes, roads, stores and other features are carefully designed and orchestrated to make living there as convenient and enjoyable as can be. For instance: Shopping centers may be deliberately situated within walking distance of planned community homes , which are typically attached—condos, townhouses, apartments—to make travel by foot manageable. Trees and flowers are planted alongside most streets, along with hiking/biking trails. High-speed commuter rails whisk workers to nearby urban centers  for their 9-to-5 jobs. There may even be village-wide Wi-Fi, to boot. Contrast this with the ad hoc way communities are usually built: In many cases, a developer just plunks down row housing on a parcel of land nowhere near commercial districts, which means you'll have to always grab your car keys for a carton of milk. Sometimes, luck or some modicum of forethought helps these neighborhoods turn out OK, but planned communi...

Two New Affinity Houses Open on Bucknell’s South Campus — News '17 || Bucknell University

Image
When visitors approach one of the two new affinity houses opening on the Bucknell University campus this semester, they'll cross an irregularly shaped section of pavement. Instead of proceeding straight from the front door to the road, the pathway forks at a 60-degree angle and meets the sidewalk to inscribe an equilateral triangle — or the Greek letter delta — in the concrete. It's a small detail that didn't cost extra to install, but will go a long way to making the building feel like home to its eventual occupants. The house at 125 Strohecker Farm Lane is planned to host the Delta Upsilon fraternity , which is recolonizing, and contains other architectural nods to the chapter's former house next to Bertrand Library. The two-story portico above the entryway replicates that found on the former DU house, as does the cherry wood trim on the building's first floor. Now known as Hildreth-Mirza Hall, the former DU house was acquired by the University in 2005 and ...

Former hospital getting luxury homes treatment

Image
Demolition work has begun at the old Craig Dunain Hospital in Inverness. Work is progressing to transform a blaze- hit Inverness hospital into an upmarket housing development . Robertson Homes is stripping the inside of Gleann Mor House at the former Craig Dunain psychiatric hospital , Westercraigs, as part of work to build 56 new luxury homes. Last night, executive chairman Bill Robertson said the first occupiers will be expected to move into these properties by spring next year. The developer has been transforming the 120- acre site surrounding the old hospital into properties for which it was granted outline planning permission in 2005. A vision for 550 properties at the site has previously been mooted by the house-builder – but the total number of homes is not set in stone. Mr Robertson said: “It (the entire development) is going to make the whole area of more interest to a lot of buyers.” Built in 1864, the landmark Craig Dunain building was gutted by a blaze in September...

The rezoning is also expected to create 1,135,032 square feet of commercial space, 472,685 square feet of community facility space , and result in a loss of 50,614 square feet of industrial space. To give a sense of the scale, there are more apartments anticipated in the East New York rezoning area , but fewer in the downtown Far Rockaway rezoning area . The document in question is the rezoning’s Draft Scope of Work, which describes the details of the proposal, projects the rezoning’s develop...

"Green" Houston isn't for everybody

SUBHEAD: The Texas capital plan for sustainability does not include some minority neighborhoods. By Raj Mankad on 15 August 2017 for Grist - (https://grist.org/article/the-newer-greener-houston-isnt-for-everybody/) Image above: In some cases, little more than a fence separates Manchester homes from neighboring fossil fuel industry . Photo by Paul Hester. From original article. Juan Parras gives one hell of a tour of Houston’s east side. He’s charming and funny. Wearing a beret, he strikes an old-world look, like he might lead you to a cafe on a plaza. He doesn’t charge a fee for his services. After all, you’re on a “toxic tour,” and Parras is on a mission. Parras grew up in 1950s West Texas . He remembers segregated schools, the restaurants that wouldn’t serve him, the unpaved roads, and the people who lived closest to the local refinery. Those experiences led him to a career as a social justice advocate . The resident of Houston’s heavily industrial east side has worked in a ci...
