Drawing the lines in battle over space By Jeff Simms Scenic Hudson is hoping to nearly double the parking at the base of Mount Beacon to ease congestion at one of the Highlands’ most popular hiking spots . Meanwhile, the Beacon City Council and a developer clashed over who should provide spaces for a new 24- unit apartment building on Main Street. Mount Beacon Representatives from Scenic Hudson appeared before the Planning Board earlier this month to discuss plans to expand the lot at the park from 40 spaces to 77. The project, if approved, would be completed this winter, said Meg Rasmussen, a park planner for the nonprofit conservation group . It would involve moving the Howland Avenue lot entrance farther away from Route 9D and turning it into an exit. Cars routinely line Howland on holidays and weekends when the park’s lot is full. ANN ARBOR, MI - The next expansion of downtown Ann Arbor 's public parking system could start next spring and be completed by the end of 2019 if there's political support for it. Downtown Development Authority leaders are continuing to discuss adding hundreds more parking spaces by expanding the garage at Ann and Ashley streets, taking it from six to nine stories. At their last meeting in July, DDA board members were presented with an estimated timeline indicating construction drawings , along with site plan approval from the City Council, could be done by January 2018, with the project going out to bid after that. The estimated construction time is 12 to 14 months. The timeline presented to the DDA board assumes construction delays and shows contractor selection could happen in May 2018, with construction lasting through December 2019. The owner of the South Bend Cubs has plans to build 120 apartments just outside the fence at Four Winds Field. “You’re looking at two buildings that kind of begin in centerfield and them move toward the stadium and then you’re going to have more of those buildings extending to the right and kind of left field areas that will be able to look in, of course, the analogy is kind of a Wrigley Ville type feel to it,” said South Bend’s Acting Direct of the Community Investment Department , Brian Pawlowski. Today that changes as Connecticut’s flagship university opens the doors of its new $140- million downtown branch campus on Prospect Street .
