Kachidokibashi bridge awarded engineering heritage title：The Asahi Shimbun
A standout bridge over the lionized Sumidagawa river in Tokyo has been designated a Mechanical Engineering Heritage property . The Kachidokibashi bridge was at the cutting edge of Japanese manufacturing when it was built 77 years ago . The designation means it has been recognized as a technologically and historically important asset . Another six items including Japan ’s first domestically produced subway car were selected as heritage properties . The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) certified them on Aug. 7, which itself is labeled "Machinery Day." Mechanical Engineering Heritage was set up in 2007 by the JSME, and it has so far certified 90 items as heritage properties . Kachidokibashi bridge , a bascule bridge measuring 246 meters in length, was opened to traffic in 1940.
