Report: Columbus apartment rents among cheapest in the U.S.

Call it affordable. Call it cheap. The fact is that those people renting apartments in Columbus enjoy some of the least expensive rates in the United States, according to Apartment List , a listing website that tracks the industry. August data show that Columbus, out of 100 markets nationwide, has the fifth- lowest median lease rates , with a one-bedroom averaging $640 a month and a two-bedroom going for $760 monthly. The lowest — or cheapest — rents on the list are in Wichita, Kan., with $560 for a one-bedroom unit and $750 for two bedrooms. It is followed by Fayetteville, N.C., Fort Wayne, Ind., Toledo, Ohio, and Columbus. Baytown tops Texas for hikes in apartment rents

Image
Apartment rents grew the most in Baytown among Texas cities for a one-year period through July, though it remained one of the lowest priced markets in the Houston area, a new report showed. The median price of a two-bedroom unit in Baytown reached $850 in July, a 10.9 percent jump over July 2014, according to the July Texas Rental Price Monitor by Apartment List . Apartment List , an apartment rental marketplace based in San Francisco, compiles the data from several hundred thousand listings it has on its site. Demand for housing in Baytown and other communities on the east side of Houston is being driven by major expansions of petrochemical plants in the region. Curiously, a one-bedroom unit in Baytown costs more than a two-bedroom unit. One-bedrooms rented for $1,150 in July after a 14.6 percent year-over-year rise, according to the report. Alvin had the second highest rate hike in the Houston region, with rents rising 9 .9 percent year-over-year to $830 for a two-bedroom unit. ...

Affordable Sticker Shock -- Climbing home and rental prices hurting chances of poorer people putting roofs over their heads | Jim Parker

Coast to coast, the housing industry currently favors the home seller as prices are rising, sales surging and inventories dwindling -- which leave the residences on the market more valuable. Take Seattle as a caffeinated example. The northwest city of 3. 5 million people boasts the hottest housing market in the country since last fall, according to the Case- Shiller home price index and reported this summer in the Seattle Times. The typical single-family house in metro Seattle cost 12 .9 percent more in April than a year ago, the report notes. Other fast-rising markets are Portland, Oregon; Dallas; Denver; and Detroit, up 9.3 to 7.4 percent respectively. Those totals compare with a 5. 5 percent national price growth rate . What's good for owners and well-off buyers can be doubly troubling for at least one group: lower income property shoppers including first-time homebuyers who can't afford average and midpoint home prices or apartment rents . According to studies, the na...

No fewer than six cranes hovered over downtown last week as private developers raced to erect more luxury student and post-collegiate housing within walking distance to University of Michigan classrooms. $675K for a serene, whitewashed condo in Cobble Hill

Image
Welcome back to The Six-Digit Club , in which we take a look at a newish-to- market listing priced under $1 million, because nice things sometimes come in small packages. Send nominations to the tipline . When the Cobble Hill Towers complex was built in the 19th century, it was intended to be affordable housing—proving, as the New York Times noted back in 2011, “that housing for the poor could be both humane and economically feasible.” Those days, of course, are long gone; in 2010, the building’s owners decided to turn the formerly affordable rental into a condo building, and now, its apartments command prices that are often at or close to the median home price for the borough. (That would be around $800,000, according to the last batch of market reports.) This quirky one-bedroom fits that bill: the 667-square-foot pad, which was recently renovated, is asking $675,000. It’s got a bit of an oddly angular floorplan , which impacts the size and shape of the bedroom (though not to a te...
