What is a planned community? It's a housing development where the homes, roads, stores and other features are carefully designed and orchestrated to make living there as convenient and enjoyable as can be. For instance: Shopping centers may be deliberately situated within walking distance of planned community homes , which are typically attached—condos, townhouses, apartments—to make travel by foot manageable. Trees and flowers are planted alongside most streets, along with hiking/biking trails. High-speed commuter rails whisk workers to nearby urban centers  for their 9-to-5 jobs. There may even be village-wide Wi-Fi, to boot. Contrast this with the ad hoc way communities are usually built: In many cases, a developer just plunks down row housing on a parcel of land nowhere near commercial districts, which means you'll have to always grab your car keys for a carton of milk. Sometimes, luck or some modicum of forethought helps these neighborhoods turn out OK, but planned communi...

The long retail spine of Sydney Road, Brunswick, just north of Melbourne's CBD, was once a prosperous trading outpost on the way to the goldfields. These days it's a bohemian mix of variety stores, op shops, halal butchers and Lebanese bakeries. Take a side street to the west, however, and a different picture emerges. Sandwiched between Sydney Road and the Upfield train line is an area undergoing rapid and widespread transformation. Light industry is fast being replaced by mid- rise apartment buildings , their inhabitants attracted by the short commute into town and cheaper prices than in the city's south-east. The quality of these units is, on the whole, depressingly bad; think poor ventilation and bedrooms that "borrow" natural light (a weasel word for being dark and windowless). The occasional jazzy façade tries feebly to make up for otherwise cheap construction amid a chorus of greys. At ground level, carpark roller doors alternate with mean pocket garden...

METHUEN — Adele LaFrenier has held a lot of titles in her life: teacher, singer, dancer, wife and mother, to name a few. She was recognized for all of that and more recently when she received the Methuen Village Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony there surrounded by more than two dozen family members and friends. Anne Lafortune, EnrichedLIFE director for the Methuen Village senior living facility , said LaFrenier was honored for her decades spent sharing her talents and passions with her family and the community. LaFrenier was born and raised in Lawrence in a large, loving Italian family with seven brothers and sisters. She graduated from Lawrence High School , attended the Mackintosh Business School and worked at the mental health department in Boston. She developed a love for music and dance as a child, competing in dance contests through her adulthood. In her 20s, she sang in a quartet called the “Hart Sisters.” That love of music and dance led her to he...
