National CORE, City of San Clemente to Host Grand Opening of Las Palmas Village Apartment Community

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – National Community Renaissance , one of the nation’s largest nonprofit community builders, and the City of San Clemente hosted a Grand Opening of the highly anticipated Las Palmas Village Apartments on Wednesday, March 2. Las Palmas provides 18 units of much- needed workforce housing for very low-income families in south Orange County . Located near San Clemente’s historic downtown, the community matches the city’s “ Spanish Village by the Sea” design style and will feature an onsite community resource center with computer stations, private underground parking , an outdoor courtyard garden area and private patios and balconies in select units. A 19th unit will be for the on-site manager. Fantastic! - Review of La Solana Apartment, Gran Tarajal, Spain

Gran Tarajal is a Spanish village and life in this pretty Spanish town is relaxed and friendly, daily trips to the local supermarket sustained us well whilst staying in this very comfortable apartment. If, like us, you choose to live on the terrace, then everything is there for you, the furniture provided is excellent. The apartment itself is spotless, as is the whole complex, with everything you need for a very relaxed time. Private parking is available, and once you have mastered the maze that is the car park, there is easy access to the excellent roads to all parts of Fuerteventura. FT correspondent’s warm memories of difficult days in Madrid

Image
I arrived in Madrid in December 2012, in time to celebrate the bleakest Christmas the city had seen in a generation. Capital and country were reeling from a series of shocks that had brought Spain to the brink of ruin. Six months earlier, a slow- burning banking crisis had blazed out of control, forcing the government to request billions in rescue aid from its European partners. Spain was in recession and suffering an unemployment crisis that would see the jobless rate peak at 27 per cent a few months after my arrival. Reminders of the nation’s desperation were everywhere. On days when I took my son to kindergarten we would pass a long line of people — not all of them poorly dressed — waiting outside a church- run soup kitchen . Walking to my office in the morning, I would find more and more shops boarded up. Inexplicably, the tiny store that sold and repaired mechanical typewriters held out, defying both the economic downturn and technical obsolescence. Then, one day, I found that ...

Poway's newest low-income housing project opens

Image
POWAY -- The city's newest affordable-housing development received its first residents over the weekend, after being cleared by the city for occupancy late last week. Escondido- based nonprofit Community HousingWorks teamed up with the city to build Solara Apartments on the southwest corner of Community Road and Hilleary Place, just south of Hilleary Park. The $16.5 million, 3- acre project added 55 apartments to the city's supply of housing for low- and very- low income people . Contractors are still putting finishing touches on the complex's landscaping. Community HousingWorks asset manager Rosemary Stabrawa said Monday, however, that Solara's first residents moved in over the weekend, and more are expected to follow by the end of this week. All the development's tenants should be in their new homes by the end of the month, she said. "Approximately jubilant," Stabrawa said, describing her mood while handing out Solara apartment keys . "It...

A World Of Opportunities Awaits Overseas

By Suzan Haskins, InternationalLiving.com A legendary Latin lover once gave some advice to a younger man. “You cannot make love to every beautiful woman you meet,” he said, “but oh, my son, at least you might try.” I was thinking about this…about love affairs…as I gazed across the rooftops of Casco Viejo, Panama’s historic quarter. Some are passionate and last a lifetime, some are fleeting, and some exist only in our minds. But no matter how strongly we feel them, we can’t act on every desire. For me, Casco Viejo is one that got away. That night, from the balustrade that lines the rooftop bar of the Tántalo Hotel, gazing across the red-tile roofs and past the whitewashed and pastel- hued stucco buildings to the shimmering bay, I felt more than a bit of remorse. The setting sun cast a silvery glow across the stone-paved streets below. It was that quiet, wistful time between the bustle of daytime activities and the raucous nighttime revelry that would soon descend…a time for reflec...
