Old Marquette School building in South Bend spared from demolition | Education

SOUTH BEND — The city's historic preservation agency Monday rejected a request by South Bend schools officials to demolish the old Marquette School building , a plan that has been in the works for years but has met with resistance from preservationists. The South Bend-St. Joseph County Historic Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the South Bend Community School Corp .'s request to demolish the 1937 building to create more outdoor space for the current Marquette Primary Montessori Academy . Elicia Feasel, the commission's executive director, recommended that the panel deny the request. In a report to the commission, she concluded that the school corporation had failed to prove the types of safety issues that would justify demolishing a local historic landmark . The commission agreed and voted 4-1 to deny the district's request for approval to demolish the building. Several members faulted the school corporation for building the new Marquette school in...

City prepared to kick in $4.6M toward Bottleworks project | 2017-08-15 | Indianapolis Business Journal

The city of Indianapolis is prepared to commit up to $4.6 million to the downtown Bottleworks project , with most of the amount needed to move an electric transmission line running through the site. A 38- page project agreement between the city and developer Hendricks Commercial Properties , set to be approved Wednesday by the Metropolitan Development Commission , outlines city costs associated with the project, along with other details. Beloit, Wisconsin-based Hendricks in July won approval from the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission to build the $260 million project on the 11-acre site of the former Coca- Cola bottling plant . Construction on the property at North College and Massachusetts avenues is expected to begin early next year. Plans call for a 136- room West Elm hotel , an eight-screen cinema, office and retail space, and apartments and condominiums. To help prime construction, the city has agreed to pay Indianapolis Power & Light up to $4 million to move ...

Dozens of trees ‘decimated’ at historic LA apartments despite landmark status

SHERMAN OAKS >> Barry Cullison stared at a 3-foot- wide tree stump that once bore the weight of a pine at least six stories tall. Across the historic Chase Knolls Garden Apartments where he lives, dozens of other mature trees were being cut down: eucalyptus, ficus, liquidambar, jacaranda, magnolia and more. “It’s heartbreaking,” said Cullison, 70, a retired actor who has lived at the Chase Knolls complex for 21 years. “This can’t be undone. They’ve decimated the trees. The trees are coming down. And all we can do is listen to the chain saws.” Chase Knolls tenants have been fighting to save the “garden” inside the garden apartments . But the owners of the complex at 13401 Riverside Drive have said they need to cut down trees and destroy 200 carports for new plumbing, power lines and other utility upgrades. • RELATED STORY: Residents of historic Chase Knolls apartments challenge city on expansion Residents have been fighting the changes. 18 Must Visit Spots in Bushwick, Brooklyn: An Untapped Cities Guide

Image
Like most neighborhoods in New York City, Bushwick enjoys a past marked by tumultuous economic and aesthetic adaptions since its establishment as a township in 1638. It is difficult to imagine, but the former town of Boswyck, spanning across what is now Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Bushwick, was once once a partially wooded grazing area for the city’s livestock and was home to mainly Dutch immigrants . It wasn’t until 1855 that the neighborhood was integrated into the city of Brooklyn, and new factories flooded the area, establishing industrial complexes and contributing to a more localized economy. One of the main historical industries of the area was beer production, and the neighborhood became known as the beer capital of the Northeast. Bushwick saw the height of its wealth during the world wars as a result of the brewing industry, which lead to the construction of the characteristic above- ground rail system as well as a number of historic mansions along Bushwick Av...
