Philadelphia-area residents see dollar signs in visit by Pope Francis

Image
Damien Bash owns a four-bedroom home, built in 1898, in Philadelphia's historic Germantown section . It features intricate stonework , hardwood floors and 19th century architectural details . Bash is offering the place to visitors attending Pope Francis ' first U.S. visit — for the weeklong World Meeting of Families gathering in downtown Philadelphia in September. His asking price? $15,000 for the week, or $2,142 a night for seven nights. How did he arrive at that figure? "I saw what everybody else was asking," he said. Opportunism seems to have gripped the Philadelphia area, where some residents are asking up to $30,000 a week to rent their homes and apartments to papal visitors. Through ads on Craigslist and Airbnb, they're betting that 1.5 million to 2 million people flooding a city of 1.5 million will produce a lucrative real-estate payday. I'm not being greedy -- I'll listen to anyone who offers me a price that's affordable for them. — Jackie S...

Chapel Hill apartment complexes cut rent for public workers

CHAPEL HILL A property management company has cut the rent at two apartment complexes to give public employees an affordable way to live in town. Chapel Hill - based Eller Capital Partners is reducing the rent for newly renovated apartments at Midtown 501 – formerly Foxcroft Apartments near Erwin Road and U.S. 15-501 – and 86 North – formerly Timberlyne Apartments near Weaver Dairy Road . The offer, which also waives application and administration fees, is available to thousands of employees who now commute from surrounding counties to work for the town of Chapel Hill , the town of Carrboro, UNC and UNC Health Care , and other state agencies. It could save them a few thousand dollars a year, said Daniel Eller, president and chief executive officer of Eller Residential, a division of Eller Capital Partners . The rent would be $645 a month for a one- bedroom apartment at 86 North – reduced from $795 – and $895 a month for two bedrooms – reduced from $1,095. That would be affordab...

Baron, the company’s chief legal officer said Wednesday. “We’re providing a niche that we think we can fill,” Mr. Baron said. He spoke after a celebration that drew Worcester politicians , government workers and business people to the CitySquare neighborhood between City Hall and Union Station for a ceremonial groundbreaking. The week in business - The Boston Globe

INDUSTRY GE delays opening of new building in Fort Point General Electric Co. has pushed back the expected opening of its new building overlooking Fort Point Channel by two years after deciding to break the headquarters project into two phases. GE vice president Ann Klee said in a memo Tuesday to Boston employees that executives expect the 12- story building , dubbed South Point , to open in mid-2021, compared with an earlier goal of 2019. Two older brick buildings , together dubbed North Point , will be renovated first, with the aim of opening them in the first half of 2019. GE has already started work on the two old buildings, originally part of a Necco candy manufacturing complex . But construction on the new building was supposed to happen concurrently with much of the Necco renovations. Now, GE will finish the Necco buildings and move employees into them before starting construction of the new building. GE expects it will take 24 months to complete the new structure. The ann...

The project, including new electricity distribution, new floating docks and other improvements, is set to start in February and take up to eight months to complete. The center's offices and retail shop will remain open, but repairs will completed at nearby marine facilities during the upgrade, said Roger Moore, chief executive of Nautical Ventures Group , which operates the center at 1515 SW 20 t h Street on Marina Mile. Lawsuits’ end could spur other cities to try rent control

Grassroots efforts to establish rent control in more California cities could get a boost from the California Apartment Association ’s decision to abandon its lawsuits seeking to overturn voter-approved rent-control laws in Richmond and Mountain View. The association, which represents landlords, posted on its website late Friday that it has “suspended its legal efforts” to overturn Measure V in Mountain View and Measure L in Richmond. “I hope it emboldens other communities to not be chilled by threats of lawsuits,” said Juliet Brodie, a Stanford Law School professor who helped draft Measure V. Judges in Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties had previously ruled against the association’s motions for preliminary injunctions seeking to halt implementation of the measures approved by each city’s voters in November. A full hearing on the merits of the case in Richmond had been scheduled for May 24; that is now canceled. The association claimed, and still believes, that the laws cons...
