Coast to coast, the housing industry currently favors the home seller as prices are rising, sales surging and inventories dwindling -- which leave the residences on the market more valuable. Take Seattle as a caffeinated example. The northwest city of 3. 5 million people boasts the hottest housing market in the country since last fall, according to the Case- Shiller home price index and reported this summer in the Seattle Times. The typical single-family house in metro Seattle cost 12 .9 percent more in April than a year ago, the report notes. Other fast-rising markets are Portland, Oregon; Dallas; Denver; and Detroit, up 9.3 to 7.4 percent respectively. Those totals compare with a 5. 5 percent national price growth rate . What's good for owners and well-off buyers can be doubly troubling for at least one group: lower income property shoppers including first-time homebuyers who can't afford average and midpoint home prices or apartment rents . According to studies, the na...

A recent housing study conducted by the city prompted debates online from residents who oppose the idea of multi- family housing in Maricopa. Read the study here Saturday morning, residents continued the discussion during “Councilman on the Corner,” a public forum held regularly by Councilman Henry Wade . “This subject seems to have resonated when I put it out there in Facebook and social media as to a question I posed,” Wade said. “It generated quite a bit of discussion, although that question was quite a small part of what the housing assessment is all about.” Some residents argued the apartment and condominium units would bring down property values and attract crime. “I also value that we have low crime, and that’s partly because of the kind of neighborhood that we have,” said resident Leonard Gonchar . Maricopans who support the idea fired back . “As a retired person, I’m not an undesirable,” said resident Karen Balliet , who said she cannot afford the cost of a single-family h...

Another ‘nonsensical’ proposal from Levine Assemblyman Marc Levine reminds me of that absurd bobble-head dog in the back of my grandmother’s Buick. Ever-present, he is reliably nonsensical in both logic and form. His most recent grand idea to create yet another corporate tax to generate revenue for affordable housing is destined to become one more unworkable scheme of the very same California government that cannot even afford to provide its citizens with a decent level of basic services, due in large part to the graft, cronyism and vote-buying that pervades the entire system. And Levine’s plan provides the added bonus of making California an even more inhospitable environment for job creation. While California government coffers swallow money with reckless abandon, the state can barely provide even sub-par services. Levine remains perfectly content to spread California’s tax spoils to the politically well-connected and a panoply of poorly managed, highly wasteful (and often counte...
