LAKELAND, FL — A Tuesday night snafu with a sprinkler head at Lakeland’s Wilmington Apartments has forced seven people out of their homes. According to Polk County Fire Rescue , crews were called to an alarm in the 5500 block of Wilmington Circle around 5:30 p.m. Aug. 15. When they arrived, they found no flames or smoke coming from the three-story complex. Instead, officials say, “water from the sprinkler system was flowing” freely. Firefighters traced down the source of the problem, finding a sprinkler head that has been broken accidentally, an email from the agency said. A 250- unit apartment building in San Clemente has been purchased by a Dallas- based pension fund advisor , Beneke-Krieg, for $27.2 million. The complex, called the Whispering Winds Apartments , was sold by Whispering Winds Apartments Inc. of Chicago, according to Ray Eldridge and Joe Leon of CB Richard Ellis Inc. in Newport Beach, who represented both buyer and seller in the deal. Built in 1986, the property will be upgraded and marketed with other high-priced units in burgeoning South County , the agents said.

Jackson Fire Department Battalion Chief David Pruitt said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the fire appears to have started in a second floor apartment. Pruitt said the fire began in apartment 101, and the entire building sustained heavy damage from smoke and water. The fire was reported at 11:05 p.m. and crews were expected to be on scene until early Friday morning , until at least 1:30 a.m. Pruitt said the fire was considered to be a two-alarm fire, requiring crews from multiple stations to respond.
